Cause they spent so long getting all their qualifications, and they could probably get more outside the uni.

1800 / week isnt that much actually

for a dude born and educated in aus with a phd or whatever lecturers have

else 1800/week is quite sweet

What? Lecturers get paid THAT much? I had no clue that that's how bloody much they were getting paid! FFS I'm gonna reconsider my options after hearing this.

Assuming if that 3 lecture thing is right, lecturers with a workload so small might even be able to hold down a second job  else they have an easy $100,000 :p

It is not that much... Each lecturer would be in a unique position, as some would be academic to the core whereas others may be industry specialists on a very good part-time deal... Look through the weekend papers for job vacancies to get an idea, but I am pretty sure that a junior lecturer is only on something like $45-50k per year (not including research grants, short-term consultancy work, etc.).

An example...

How much do you think humanities lecturers would be paid? Because if it's around that, you could earn a lot more lecturing journalism than actually being a journalist!!

They get paid a base salary for the times they don't lecture, and then they get paid the $100-$500 amount based on the time they actually lecture I believe. So they don't earn that much the whole time they are there, so don't get the wrong idea :p. You will notice that some lectures are junior and some are senior and such, and that will depend on how much they get paid and all.

The pay for academics in Australia is fixed in Australia.
If you want good pay as an academic go overseas, at least double the pay.

In USA academics are payed by the popularity of subject, eg. Computer science professors (the term 'professor' is different in usa) might get paid $150k a year. While history (i am generalising here) may be paid a lowly 50-60k.

If you want the exact figures for australians. Go to the staff section of any university web page.

The max pay is around $100k for Professor. +20-30k for dean etc.
