Exactly. The workload is so small that essentially for brevity, we can say relative to the length of an entire week, we're getting paid 3 X $600 for spending nearly no time. Find another job(s), and you'll be financially set.

How much do you guys reckon a mathematics lecturer would get paid? That would be a beaut job, in my opinion.

math lecturer = good job?
man... doesnt math actually get hard in uni while other stuff (say arts) gets more common sense? thats the vibe i get at least...

so to be a math lecturer wouldnt be easy at all
LEVEL A (ASSOCIATE LECTURER)
1st step $37,823
i resent that.

i mean, how can a guy with a phd, no matter how new he is to the field, be worth under 38k / year :(

Maths is only hard to people who are not good at maths. I love maths, so I would love to teach it. Coincidentally maths lecturers probably would be higher paid than something like say, Arts, so that works well for me too.

Yeah, I'm the guy with the monster truck.

So conclusively we're saying that the main drawbacks to making lecturing a profession are the amount of time and effort used for obtaining all the relevant degrees, and the general low hours you get?

I mean, say I got a 9-5 Mon to Fri job lecturing instead of doing a few measley hours each week, at $100-$600 hour, I'd be sure to owning another set of megawheels in no time eh?

Most lecturers at uni usually teach the same subject each semester (usually 2 lectures a semester as well), so after a few years u'd be quite good at teaching that subject I'd imagine :p

2 lectures per semester? Shit, that would mean around 6 lectures per week for a subject of 6cp. Not bad actually, especially if I was rated at $600 or something.

no, read it again, if you have a phd, you start off at at least step 6.
"6th step $47,818"
which is still pretty pov.

Grow up. There is no such thing as an easy or common sense subject.

If you had a decent PhD thesis you would start higher than that....

Cause you can be an academic without a PhD thesis, just a crap one.

Geez you guys serious? That is amazing what other job gets you that much hourly pay?

But i guess this rate is only for those top lecturers. I checked out some job income sites and the average income for lecturer is about $1350/ week. Not sure about the hours but should be pretty low (like under 20?).

And do universities like restrict the amount of hours you teach? What stops a professor from doing 30 hours at $200/hr to earn $6000 a week???

If you're the CEO of a large transnational software company who also has the coincidental name of 'Bill Gates', you may be topping the $1M per hour rate.

your not really paid by the hour.... the hour value is just a guide, most ppl work more hours to finish research.
