is led zeppelins stairway to heaven, really an imaginitive journey????
cause i really wanted to do it but the more i think about it it doesn't seem to be imaginitive. And im confused with what its about,

1. either and woman buying drugs and there building herself a stairway to heaven cause she'll eventually die from them

OR

2. a woman thinking material possessions are everything but not realising that it wont help get her into heaven.

any ideas on this one?

I'm pretty sure the song is not about drugs. Led Zeppelin didn't really write about drugs unless I've completely missed something.

The second suggestion looks more likely. I'd add to that they seem to suggest her to find her answer, way into heaven, "on the whispering winds" which I'd take to mean her heart. Therefore the worthiness of her heart or something gets her in. At the end she's obviously learnt her lesson and everything "still turns to gold" but she doesn't need money.

Robert Plant is openly regretful of his lyrics on that song though. I dunno what his purpose was or why he disagrees with it now. Anyway that's what I think.

Well I believe that knowing she can buy the illusory stairway even if she arrives at "the stores" after closing time -- ostensibly management will put in "a word" for her -- suggests her privileged status (she is identified as "a lady," not "a woman") and convinces her she can have anything she desires, even if it cannot exist.

From a long time Led Zep fan, you are 100% correct.

dont really know if its that imaginative tho..
consider the imagery of evocative words like: stairway to heaven, And my spirit is crying for leaving, Our shadows taller than our souls, And the forest will echo with laughter...sounds very imaginative 2 me, cant get those in physical journeys now can u?

for all those who want to help, here are the lyrics to the song:

Stairway to Heaven
(As Recorded by Tiny Tim & Brave Combo)

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

And it makes me wonder

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen

Yes there are two paths you can go by
but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

And she's buying a stairway to heaven, uh uh uh.

I'd say the second suggestion is more accurate. I dont' think the song is about drugs though...
