is it more important to do better in English than other subs since everyone has to do english or is it better to excel in harder subs i.e. physics?

just do well in EVERYTHING!
=D

buh um.
i think it depends on wat english you do...cos if its only standard..its an easier subject and it doesnt really scale high..even if u do well in itt..
physics is considered to be a harder subject..so if u do really well in it..then u get scaled up..

Idealistically, it is more important to maintain consistent results and place equal importance upon every subject.

I pretty sure that the scaling of physics was about the same as (or even less than) advanced english?
There is a really helpful table about all that somewhere around on here.....

You should have equal priority on all your subjects.

btw I'm pretty sure Arnold doesn't write 3unit.

Um... no?

Look here:
http://www.boredofstudies.org/scaledmeans.php

These are the scaled means from 2001-2003
And as you can see physics has a lower scaled mean than English Adv, Extension 1 and Extension 2 in every year.
The higher the scaled mean then the higher the scaling of the subject.

I win :D

in terms of UAI, you can check how each your individual subjects scaled for last years HSC on the UAC website.

http://www.uac.edu.au/pubs/pdf/2007_table_A3.pdf

This shows that the average HSC mark for physics scaled to a 30.9, and the average HSC marks for English Advanced scaled to a 31.2, slightly higher. However this is a small difference, and could simply be because the English Adv cohort is "smarter" than the Physics cohort. You can compare all the fine details yourself.

However, taking a closer look you can also see that what everyone else has posted here is totally correct: it is better to do moderately well in all your subjects than to blitz one and neglect the rest. This is because a)all the subjects included in the calculation of your UAI will count equally and b) there is little difference between the scaled marks you recieve for different HSC marks in the top percentiles, but as you go down further, the scaled marks drop quicker and quicker.

Also remember that no matter how good your Physics and other subjects are, at least 2U of English must be included in your UAI calculation, even if it's your worst subject.

You probably want to do well in both.

That said, English is going to count towards your UAI however well or badly you do. If you have more than ten units, any of your other subjects can not count if you do badly.

Haha yes that was my reaction when I realised how my different subjects scaled... I was suprised about how poor pdhpe scales, it contains A LOT of content, as does biology.

:(
Can always count on extension maths to scale high though :skip:
