I'm very new to this, being in year 11.
I tried out SAM for the first time, and I wasn't very happy to say the least!!

I wrote in 70 for each subject, because I am averaging 70 for every subject at the moment.

Society and Culture
Advanced English
Extension English
General Maths
PDHPE
Geography
Business

SAM gave me a UAI of '52.1'
Did I make a mistake? Or are my subjects truly low scaled!?
The UAI didn't become higher than the average mark, until I wrote the average as 90.

Pretty accurate, you need to be in the 90s with your subs

ps: seriously look into how all of your subjects scale... you don't want to realise in y12 that you're stuck with shit subjects

You can't put raw marks into SAM, you will inevitably get an inaccurate estimation.

The UAI is a rank, it has nothing to do with the average of your marks.

Fun fact for you, basically all your subjects are relatively low scaling except for Ext English. Adv Eng is alright at scaling. So these low scaling subjects will really affect your UAI when your marks at them are low.

low marks will give you a relatively low uai even if you have good scaling subs.

its pretty accurate.

think in terms of bands.. putting in marks of 70 means you think you will get a low band 4 (borderline of band 3 and band 4). If you (and your teachers) think thats about the band you will get, then that is about the uai you will get.

Thanks everyone.
I've only had one exam for each subject...So I cant really judge how I am going as of yet.
But thats pretty disappointing that my subjects don't scale well... but i suppose it will make me work harder!

One thing to consider: school assessments are generally harder than HSC.

hey, I know Standard English scales the same as ADvanced as it has been mentioned many times and the English head teacher said so. But out of curiosity, I used sam and it gave a higher uai with standard than advanced. i'm only in year 10 and i was only doing this to check out the scaling but yeh. this is what i entered:

English Advanced 70
Maths Ext 1 90
Ancient History 90
Biology 90
Chemistry 90
Business Studies 90

uai= 90.45

compared with....

English Standard 70
Maths Ext 1 90
Ancient History 90
Biology 90
Chemistry 90
Business Studies 90

uai = 90.70

how come? does standard scale higher or did i do something wrong?

no, you are quite right. they scale the same. but remember scaling is based on raw marks. so equal raw marks scale the same, but as raw marks are not equal to aligned marks, the aligned marks you put into SAM will result in different raw marks. so the different marks scale differently.

so although standard and advanced scale the same, its harder to get a higher mark in standard than advanced.

Don't you mean the other way around?
