Hi, I'm really panicking because today I received my marks from my 2nd assessment in the area of study in discovery for english advanced and I got 6/15 for my essay. I really don't understand where I went wrong and I even had an english tutor go through it with me and I constructed it well. The point is will this mark greatly affect my atar? If it does, what marks should I get to achieve an atar of 80??? I'm panicking so much because I don't handle stress well and if I'm over stressed I get panic attacks. I just really want to do well in school im just devastated about this shitty mark... Didn't have the chance to ask my English teacher where I went wrong in the assessment because i was in shock .

I was in the same boat last term and I got the exact same mark aha. I was terrified but I learnt that you can defs improve on that. Getting that bad mark was the best thing that happened to me in a way as it showed that my writing isn't as good as I think it is, so I fixed up my whole essay from scratch and it's twice as better than my assesment one.

atar goal:91 but will be happy with 85+

I got 6/20 for my module C trial essay. I thought all hope was lost in English. Ended up getting 90 Exam Mark, because I spent an incredible amount of time correcting my problems with the essay. That happened in the space of about 2 months, you've got 10 months until HSC. Don't stress!

How did you correct your problems?? I'm finding that correcting myself is extremely impossible.. Any suggestions to improve essay writing and expansion of formal vocabulary?

It's difficult to do that on your own. Either find a good tutor (preferably a high achieving ex-HSC student who knows what it takes to score marks) to go through your essay or read exemplary essays and see what you can do to sort of "emulate" them. Better yet, do both :D

For module C, I half memorised/half adapted an essay - I generally knew what I was going to write about, but I was fluid in the way in which I presented the argument, and the order of the argument. As such, I scrapped the generic essay I used for the trial, and began work on a new one. I wrote what I thought was a fairly solid generic, and applied it to two questions, before getting my teacher to mark it. I did this 3-4 times in the space of a month.

I think the best way to improve essay writing is to practice, best way to expand formal vocabulary is to read lots of good essays and notes.

As for motivation, well, that's your problem. I found motivation in the idea of getting into university.
