So basically we had a big talk about how subjects 'scaling well' isn't really a thing. They emphasis on just doing well on ALL subjects no matter what difficulty.

Can someone clarify to me if this is true? If not, are my subjects enough to obtain a 90+ atar?

I'm currently doing: Eng Standard, General Maths, Design and Tech, Biology, Visual Arts.

Any subjects can obtain you a 99+ ATAR.

Scaling matters only when you do good. Don't get dragged down by being 1st or close to 1st.

DW too much about scaling.

Simple Answer: Yes you can obtain 90+ ATAR if you do well in those subjects.

Yes you can, but it will be very difficult (~90 in all subjects). That being said, if you want a 90 ATAR it will be difficult no matter what subjects you do. Put your grades into some ATAR calculators with your subjects to get a rough idea of what marks you might need to get your desired ATAR.

Good luck in the HSC :)

If scaling 'isn't really a thing' then why would so many students take subjects like 4 Unit maths when they can do General Maths and get a really high mark and ATAR? Of course it's a thing. It might be a bit difficult to obtain 90+ atar with your subjects but it's not that hard, just work consistently and you'll get there! Generally speaking a 90 ATAR requires high 80s in all your subjects

If you get a final mark of 100 in all of those subjects your ATAR is probably going to be extremely high anyhow.

School emphasizes "Scaling Myths"

The whole point of scaling is for comparability between candidates when combining the cohorts of different courses into a common scale for ATAR ranking.

The reason 2U maths scales better than General for example is not because it is harder but because the cohort in 2U is stronger on average than the cohort in General on average.

So in theory you should get the same scaled mark regardless of whether you do General or 2U generally speaking because theoretically your rank across the combined cohorts should be the same.

However, in reality there are other factors that come into play not accounted for in the scaling model (such as differences in course content and difficulty) which would lead to differences in scaled mark depending on whether you chose General or 2U.

Why do people think that if you do low scaling subjects, you'll be scaled lower. This isn't necessarily true in the case the case that you do well in all your subjects (including english). People have gotten 99+ atar without science or maths

Re: School emphasizes "Scaling Myths"

Um 'low scaling' subjects by definition 'scale lower'...
Yeah but if you do well you don't get scaled lower. Just do well and outrank your peers that's all that matters

There's a reason why it's called 'low scaling '
If you do end up with a high score, it would most likely be around the same as your raw mark. This is not the case with higher scaling subs, you just get scaled up lmao. But ofc if you do shit in a high scaling subs you're gonna be fked but if you do shit in low scaling sub, prepare for your *
