I was just wondering, what are everybody else's school networks like?

The other day I was just complaining about how restricted we are; we can't download any .zip files or anything with a Windows Media Player extension. We also appear to be blocked from most blog sites and most forums - although oddly enough BoS seems okay.

Obviously Instant Messaging is out of the question - all the normal clients are blocked, as well as web-based ones...and naturally anything remotely resembling P2P has been blocked since 2002 (when I collected half my music collection, being a small and unethical nerdy eighth grader).

I've heard some "horror stories" of school networks that block out everything except Britannica...

We have boarders at our school, and they've become very innovative with their ways of sneaking around after-hours...such as changing proxies or something like that.

Our school's network security is non-existant once you're registered for use. IM clients, P2P, I don't think any sites are blocked, and we can download what we like. The wireless has WEP encryption and MAC address filtering, so you can't get in without being authenticated, but once you are, run baby run. The trick here is that the school computers themselves don't work half the time, and only a few people have laptops which are connected to the network. The rest of the school really doesn't care. 'Tis nice...

On my school network you cant right click on anything except in microsoft word, they also have the Department of Education Web Filter on which blocks all the game sites, porn etc. You can't download anything and all the web messenger sites have been blocked. I tried using my laptop and used a network cable on the schools network but it locked me out.

Use DMS to IP conversion to get into restricted sites, that usually bypasses the checks on site content. Most just check the URL for restricted media, other things such as MSN you can use E-Messenger or another Online Client. The ways to get around restrictions in programs is look for a program that works without restriction, IE Excel or some word processing program. Then name the target program that title and it will work without restrictions.
Web Based Messenger can be acessed by using a anonamous(sp) proxy.
My school's network is terrible.

I was lucky because i had unbeknowned access to several of the teachers' network accounts with administration priviledge. What I hate is when people came into my classes near the computer room to quickly log them in. Of course I only did that to trustworthy people!

Funny though, nearing the end of our HSC tutoring era, we got into the files of half-yearly reports, changed the teachers comments. I insisted that we didn't save the file back on the network but i had overwhelming peer-pressure and couldn't care less lol
The forged reports looked very much real.. with the logo and everything.

A much more obvious use in the earlier days was to retreive examination documents or plans (hehe reminds me of some infiltration type games). However, none of the accessable teachers are any of my teachers or that they're smart enough to carry such documents in removable drives.

Back to the point of internet access... yes, once logged in as an administrator or teacher all sites in the internet are accessable. Programs that uses access to the internet/LAN (eg. MSN Messenger and CS: Source yes.. we played cs when we should've studied) can do so with a little tweak to windows firewall.

Ours is much the same, though simply installing firefox or running mobile firefox and free download manager or some other download manager gets around 90% of the problems. You can right click in sites, you can download anything via http or ftp. Just can't use torrents or other p2p stuff...or at least, not that I've figured out a way to do yet, not unless you have a remote web server and can use torrentflux...
