School ranking doesn't directly impact your ATAR, though the performance of your school in a subject and your ranking relative to it does.

The best analogy I could give for how internal marks work is that they look at your in-school marks for the subject with names, and then look at the list of exam marks from you school without any names, and try to guess which mark each kid would’ve gotten. For example, if someone ranked first internally, then NESA would give them the highest HSC exam mark your school got in that subject as their internal mark, and if someone came last, then NESA would give them the lowest exam mark your school in that subject as their internal mark. This internal mark makes up 50% of your overall HSC mark

Because of this, if you go to a higher ranking school then typically you won't need as high of a ranking as someone from a lower ranking school, which makes sense - it's obviously harder to rank well from a high ranking school.

Ah okay awesome thankyou, the teachers at my school (which does rank top 10) keep telling my rank (which is not as high as i would have liked it to be) is fine and the school will push us up but I don't want to solely rely on it ya know :)

If you want a ballpark estimate of your internal mark in a subject, check how many band 6s your school got in that subject last year on hscninja - for example if your school gets 10 band 6s in a subject and you're coming 11th, you're probably slightly under a band 6.

oh damn I never thought of it like that - i kinda just assumed if I'm getting close to 90s in practice scaling will push it up... ?

a system like that wouldn't work because then teachers would just give everyone 100% to boost their ATAR

keep in mind its based on your cohort, not the previous years, its just a way to estimate

no I meant like b6 in external - if I am getting close to b6 in practice and then in external, I would assume half my total HSC mark for that subject is therefore b6??

but then this might seem dumb but whats the point of working really hard for the hsc if you get a really good mark it might be given to someone else if they ranked higher than you?

huh?????

if you're getting aligned b6s in past papers then yes your external mark will probably be a b6, thats seperate to internals though

50% of your mark is your externals, which is your own mark

if I am getting close to b6 in practice AT HOME, and I sit the HSC external exam, and get close to b6/b6, I would assume that due to scaling of my subjects, my mark would be pulled up to be a b6. ***
