It's like anything, obey the rules and you have nothing to worry about...

Nah, State-wide initative.
Plus you only have less then five weeks until you graduate and won't have to worry so just obey the rules if you are so concerned. Also they don't always text when you are away either but probably best not to risk it since it is new at your school they will be right into it.

my school doesnt do it but i reckon its a bit invasive... like it really implies a lack of trust in the students, and it seems very unnecessary when there are plenty of other equally viable ways to find out why someone is absent/late. it's not a crime to be away from school if you're sick, or to be late every once in a while. surely they could just wait until you're next at school and get you to hand in a note? or call ahead if you know you'll be away? as for truanters, as if there would be sooo many people doing it that the school feels the need to text the parents of every single person who is more than likely just at home with a headache? geez... oh and, truants aside, if you're away for a genuine reason im pretty sure your parents would know, its not as if they would need reminding of the fact.

There is another way to look at this - and that is the issue of child safety.

What happens if your parents/guardians believe that you are at school and the school is able to let them know that you aren't? That means that action can be taken to find you sooner and the 6 hours or so difference between letting your parents know at 9.00 a.m. that you aren't at school and 3.00 p.m. or later when they actually find out something is wrong could be crucial.

In Florida, I believe in the USA, they have a time limit in which they actually have to contact the parents if their child isn't at school for that very reason.

It isn't so much a lack of trust in the kids, or parents but more to make sure that the kids are safe - i.e. that someone does actually know where the kid is.
