Hey does anyone do science law at UTS? IF so, what area are you focused in and how do you find it. Are the science facilities at UTS really limited/bad? If you'd had a choice (ie UAI was high enough) would you have chosen to do your course at another university? Thanks heaps if anyone can help me with these questions.

I'm doing Science/Arts (International Studies) and I've been thinking of transferring to Science/Law next year. This is what I can say about the Science faculty:

Facilities:
Well, the UTS science building is probably one of the oldest around. That said it doesn't look very good at all. Despite this I would say the labs are well stocked and we aren't known for being short on supplies. Everything works well too, no broken taps or anything. They're just a little old. :p

Staff:
Like any uni, there will be lecturers, tutors etc that just shouldn't be in education. Maybe they hate students, or maybe they don't know what they're supposed to be teaching, but somehow you get the feeling that they just don't belong at the front of the room. Happily, I haven't encountered many of these at UTS. All of my lecturers have been at the very least competent, and all my lab tutors have been happy to help me with stuff. Another thing, they treat you like people. You can actually get to know your lecturers/tutors, and surprisingly they do care. I've had a few problems with semester and needed a bit of leeway (eg a death in the family meant I couldn't do an assessment). They were happy to accomodate me, unlike some of the horror stories I've heard from other unis.

Range of Courses, Reputation:
Not as wide as other unis. People go to USyd and UNSW because they have an excellent overall reputation and they have lots of courses - fair enough, they're big universities. However, something people often complain about is their particular faculty, department, course etc are worthless. This happens because people look at too wide a picture when the details really matter.

UTS is a relatively small university with a good reputation for quality. Now they don't offer every course under the sun, just ones they're good with - why else would the biggest faculty be Engineering (second largest is Science), while Arts doesn't even exist? Sure we have that Humanities and Social Sciences, but that's just Communications courses - no real "Arts" faculty. We don't have Psychology, like the other unis nearby...but my major is Nanotechnology, and the Institute for Nanoscale Technology at UTS is considered the leading institution for Nanotechnology research in the region - a hard act for UNSW and USyd to follow. :p

Basically, if I'd had a higher UAI, then at the time I would have preferred UNSW (and maybe USyd). However, now I know a lot more about how the academic and real worlds look at graduates, and for this course UTS is the only option.

Ok, now for your course:
Which major do you want to take in science? I don't think there's much question, since a UTS is already worth almost if not as much as a USyd or UNSW one (this is discussed elsewhere) so there's no problem in terms of what the degree is worth. What matters now is your desired specialty - there's a possibility that your major isn't offered at UTS. If it is, and it's a "good course" at UTS, then I'd go for it. Not for the reasons "lucky" gave (they shouldn't even be important to your career choice at this stage) but because you'll be getting a good deal. :)

hey thanks lex, that was quite insightful. Yeah I just screwed my english/phys/maths assessments so I feel USYD law is slim. So UTS sounds good I guess^^
However if you don't mind me asking why did you not transfer to USYD if you'd initially wanted to go there?

and lucky, tanks for your input but err....maybe you shouldn't voice this:

hmmm, I'm not indigenous myself but there's nothing that would get you into more of a muddle than being politically incorrect.
neways yea thanks guys

Well, like I said I'm in Science/Arts now right? Arts in Sydney is definitely better than UTS (since we don't have an Arts faculty) but I'm in International Studies, and UTS is a lot closer in that respect. I actually wanted the International Studies program at UNSW (you can major in two languages) but the important part of my degree program is the Science component - my major being Nanotechnology. As mentioned before, nothing beats UTS Nano - anywhere. I was lucky enough to stumbleinto UTS by chance, really (ie my UAI sucked) and I'm glad for it. One semester into uni and everything is looking up up up. :)

Hey lexi, what about biotech at UTS? Or anyone that does biotech at that..

Initially I was thinking of combined media/comm with law, but Biotech seems to be a very cool option as well - since at the moment I really enjoy Biology + It seems their may be some interesting oppurtunities in the future for Biotech. + Law...

Though to be honest, I've never heard much about sciences at UTS..so i'm unsure what its like etc etc

actually I was considering international law as well, but am not too sure about the difference between international law and international studies/law as i have read off the Usyd pamphlet.

What I'd like to do is be a lawyer on an international scale (at least eventually), ie I can function in 3 languages so I don't want that to go to waste. I'd also like to work in other parts of the world, move around etc.

So yeah what should i study, and will studying science law (biomolecular/patent) eventually lead me to this?

@neo_o

im first year student. so basically what they're teaching us atm is the "basics".. basically what you need to know to do the "stuff"

so far.. everything is cool.

Alot of chemistry seems to be involved, but that would be expected.

Personally, i find the course to be very well balanced. Its not demanding yet enjoyable :)

Thanks for that info Lex.
Im trying to decide if i want to go to UTS to study science but i will have to move from newcastle to do so. If any one out there can help me with the Bsc (Environmental) or any info that would be much appreciated. UTS has a good employment rep and i wont be getting the marsk for Syd or NSW so UTS looks good..apart from the distance from home.

On the international scale, Science/Law could get you working with such organisations as the international court/s, the UN, multinational companies (rich people need lawyers too) and other organisations. Especially with environmental law, where you may need to have legal and scientific knowledge to interpret and comply with the environmental (and related) requirements of various countries.

More accurate and specialised information will be available from the Faculties of Law and Science (especially about career options) so I strongly encourage you to contact them.

------------------------------

International Law and International Studies/Law are very different things.

International Law focuses on the role of Law for international disputes and relations (such things as the Rules of War, Sovereignty, Law of the Sea, Humanitarian Law etc) and the way countries with different legal systems may reach agreement with each other in terms of treaties and so on. It deals with international relations in a legal context.

International Studies/Law is a double degree combining the study of Law with the study of language and culture. You still have to pick a Law major, but you also study a country (or countries, depending which uni and stream you pick) in terms of its language, history and culture. This will groom you not for Lnternational Law (unless that is your Law major) but for dealings with people/entities of that/those particular nation/s. International Studies is the same when combined with any degree - it enhances your qualification in a specific cultural context, without affecting the content.
