Hey guys I am in year 10 and I gotta do a science project. I was thinking of doing which type of bread molds the fastest. Can someone please give me a suitable experiment I could do to test this. Plus, I need to know where to put the bread, how often to observe the bread and what I should observe. Thanks in advance guys! :)

LOL another experiment

Just buy a few different company's breads of different types(i mean, pick the cheap ones). And the reason I said to you to vary the company as well as types of breads is coz some company might have used a great deal of chemicals to preserve it and that significantly changes the results. Then, literally leave the breads with packaging opened somewhere (All breads used at the same place and this will be your controlled variables - exactly the same conditions for all bread except the type of bread used [temp, air pressure, humidity, etc]) in positions that are convenient when you need to take photos. From Day1 till all bread moulds, carry out the experiment, taking one photo once per day at exactly the same time to ensure consistency in time increments. Then, depending on how you need to present it, make a powerpoint presentation or a formal experimental report on a ms word document.

I hope I didn't miss anything important.

woah study-freak you are really helpful. The reason I'm not doing the other project is because my friend in year 11 suggested to measure something like observations instead of quantitative measurements. Plus, it seemed too hard to do and to get all the materials. Sorry, but I did not understand the part where you said to put all the breads, do you mean like put the whole loaf of bread outside or just one slice? One more thing, what would be a good hypothesis for this experiment?

Thanks for all your help study-freak :):)
+good luck on your HSC this year! I hope you get 99.9% UAI. Not 100% cause then you're a freak! :)

LOL I wish I am capable of being the 'freak' though.

Anyway, well yea, qualitative ones will surely be easier than quantitative ones and I can assure you that no one would actually do something like calorimetry in yr10 coz it's just too hard.

So about the bread, you can either place just a slice or a loaf of bread outside, but one slice will become quite dry soon. I am not sure if dry bread can still mould (perhaps, you can test it) so I guess it's prob better to put a loaf of bread outside but I am not sure which one the better way is.

And I am not really sure about the hypothesis but it's supposed to be just an educated guess and will probably be worth only 1 mark.
If I were to write the hypothesis I would say: "Different types of bread vary in the composition and so will mould at different rates. The more wet and fatty(like, lots of butter in it) the bread is, the faster it is expected to mould. Moreover, the more the preservatives, the slower the rate will be."

Not sure it's a good one to use though.
Anyway, good luck with the experiment and SC!
