what good science degrees are out there?
does anyone do a science degree they'd like to tell me about ?

I was doing a Medical Microbiology and Immunology major at UNSW last year for my B Science degree. *stabs*

Apparently it gets interesting 2nd year

Yeah I suppose, quite true. I was going to choose it but I don't have the passion for science and I aren't real smart or anything so I decided against it

Sciences are great! You can manipulate the subjects to ANY pre-existing interests you may have and thus construct what is effectively a custom degree. Brilliant!

yea sci is very flexible i think ill major in Medical Microbiology and Immunology/Biochemistry and taking up some commerce subjects every session just to be able to use the computing labs that being if i make it through first year alive....

i saw this commerce / science one at UNSW .. sounds good but .. what other good degrees are out there? should i pick like a general ise B Sc. adv and then like decide my options... or should i like specifically go tino sumfing like biotechnology or genetics which has its own separte degree?

Science Advanced Math at USyd, they take extension 2 maths as assumed knowledge *faints*

kimmeh : if u choose just BSc, u have until about the middle of second yr to decide what u wanna major in ... in first yr, u'd be doing general courses like chem, maths, phys etc

what about sc. adv? what make sc. adv so special apart from it being the uai is 97 for usyd?

the word adv lol Seriously just prod all those adv sci students enough and they all realise they should have gone for a combined degree with their 97 UAI. The thing is if you do adv sci and dont maintain a credit average you drop down to sci. Waste of a 97 UAI IMO.

well check if you cant major in those 'specialised' majors in the normal degree. Usually if you do a double degree you can do other majors that you wouldnt be able to in the normal one ie if you do commerce/science you can major in computer science (which is a specialised degree UAI 88?).

With specialised degrees (excl comp sci) they usually implement an honours program but you can also do honours if you do normal sci provided you get a CR average (same for all degrees). The thing with specialised degrees is you have chosen your major so if you change your mind you'd have to drop to normal sci.

with similar majors adv sci students get preference in (adv) subjects but if you had performed well enough theres nothing stopping you from choosing them if you're in normal sci. Unless you plan on majoring in neuroscience, applied/pure mathematics or physics there isn't a real need to do adv sci

? Are you sure about the credit average?



Advanced Science is the way to go if you get the UAI and you are interested in heading towards a research career of sorts in that filed.

I'd say that USyd's BSc (adv) is 'better' than UNSW's due to the UAI for the respective degrees. Getting above 97 is nowhere near as easy as getting over 90, and a 'stronger' student core is sure to push you higher levels. But in terms of the subjects that are offered... ?
