So I've received some of my trials results and they’re not too great (barely passing so my ranks are terrible ha), is there still a chance to get at least band 5s in HSC considering I work my butt off until externals? In most my subjects, my cohort is pretty determined to do well (except for ancient and extension history lol), and my chem class is particularly competitive. Should I keep studying to ace HSC? Has anyone been in this situation before?

I agree with BLIT2014. Not only do externals count for 50%, but also from what you've said, if your cohort is competitive, they can drag your school mark up. For example, even if your barely passing at school, if you have rank X, and after externals, the person in your who ranked X in externals gets say, a 75, then your school mark will be 75, even if you were barely passing. (The other 50%, of course, is your external mark, so as long as you study your hardest, you can improve that).

So, Keep studying!
