Perhaps there should be some medal for dying in an accident... but I dunno, these medals have deep traditional backgrounds.
They're traditionally only given to people who displayed valor/bravery in combat... I don't think they should be given a medal (but i know this will be an unpopular view).

Australia's military bravery medals are only given out in combat.

The only medal's they are eligible for is civilian bravery medals.

I don't think they should necessairly get them, if they knew the chopper was playing up and they continued anyway possibly, but for just being involved in a crash no matter how noble the cause doesn't really count as brave.

Seems to me it's to pacify the public (media) to help the govt get off the hook for having 'rusting' (as they put it on Hack, on Triple J yesterday) equipment...

wtf?
Seems to me u have no idea. The government isn't 'trying' to get off the hook, and its currently unknown what went wrong on the helicopter.

It seems to me its a public reaction of "OMG WE HAVE TO GIVE THEM MEDALS!!!", and the media wanting to make the public demand medals.

No, they shouldn't, as someone else has said, I get the feeling it's only being done to help appease the families.

Rusting equipment?

A) Taxpayers would whinge and bitch about more money being spent when it doesnt need to.

B) By the time they are pulled out of service it will be due to airframe problems. THe F111 afaik currently have only the original airframe and engines, and the engines are planning on being upgraded! Yet the F111's are pre vietnam war, numerous deaths have happened in them, and they are suppose to go on for another 15 years until the JSF can replace them.

since when does dying in a work related accident mean that you get a medal?

Medals are for bravery. Sad as it is, simply dying is not medal-worthy.

If we give medals to the sea-king victims, will we have to give a medal to every single person who dies in an army related operation from now on? That'll get mighty expensive if we have another major war.

They served, and they died in service. As far as I am concerned, they should be awared an honour of some sort. I do agree with the argument that we really should not demean our military honour system in an American sense by handing out medals/honours for not peeing on your shoe when at a field loo, but at the same time I can see no real point in denying those who died some sort of honour just because we may also have to honour all who have died during past actions, or because our medal system is/was based upon acts of bravery. Times change, and given the relative lack of recent military deaths it is more than understandable that this development has gathered pace (supported by Labor and the Dems, I believe, so it's hardly a media beat-up).

They were serving our country in the field in a humanitarian capacity, and they do deserve to be 'rewarded' in some way, no matter the thoughts of the RSL. Of course, I would assume that it would not be regarded as a bravery medal, so is there any real harm in this development?

Why would this view be considered 'unpopular'. Hundreds of others have died like this and they didn't get a medal, and that guy who fell in the hole in the solomons, he didn't get a medal, why should these people be any different?

I believe their wives and children are getting monetary compensation for their death in service. By all means, reward them for their service. But there is no logic to giving medals to people who have done nothing to earn them.

I think the main thing behind the drive to get medals is that the President of Indonesia gave them the highest award in Indonesia, and on the contrary, Australia looked stingy.

they dont deserve a bravery medal at all, they werent brave.

however, i think they are owed some sort of honour, because they died trying to help others, and as others have pointed out, given the relative lack of military deaths in the last 15 years or so, i think it appropriate those who die while serving their country. it doesnt even have 2 be a medal, but some formal form of recognition is appropriate

They dont deserve medels, they werent brave, they werent in combat, only a select group of ppl get them, not evenb everyone who dies in combat - and to the "honour" they recieve - a full military funeral paid by the edefense force, and the familys (wifes/husbands, acknowledgd de facrtos & children) get substantial benefits - my father was in air frce and died, and we are quite content with what the defense force gave us, and the systems gotten better sincs 93.

A bit after that. I think the pigs are suppose to go to 2020. After all they aren't being instantly replaced. You still have to go through the acquisition process of the F35's.
