What seems like the most likely text type they'll use... because my story would only go well for general story, recount, journal... not letter, conversation etc...

i think they'll mostly tell us to write in the form of letters or journal/diary entries.

Narrative could be the best

Whats stopping them from asking us to do an essay but?

It could be anything.

They can ask any text type they desire except the essay, for it is a creative piece not an analytical. This means it will revolve around a situation you have invented rather than deconstructing an issue. They will however refrain from poetry simply because its too difficult to mark, and would quite simply flatten any candidate except the Extension 2 students who did poetry. So anything except essays and poetry could appear in this question, therefore it would be best to prepare for them all.

You can chose poetry if they leave it open...

such as "compose a creative response by
discussing this statement, blah blah blah journey"

Yeah, definitely DO NOT try using poetry, if you read the 2004/2003 hsc comments, the examiners were just awarding fails to anyone who attempted poetry. Even if you think you're pro at poetry, don't try, for examiners are really lazy people, they can't be bothered to think about all the things that your poetry relates to, in last year's comment they made the excuse that people who did do poetry focuses more upon the rhyming than the literal meaning. [Which I think is rather lame, seeing how much information you can write out of Skrzynecki's simple imagery and free verse poems]

Wasn't the HSC 2004 creative piece one that was "You may write in any form you wish"?

But who said they can't specify the text type.

I really hope they make it a bit challenging, to stop people from using their stupid generic pre-written stories.
It just depends to what extent you've prepared

I know people that have prepared for every single
textype, and even they could be put on the spot
if they ask you to respond to a quote...
(or make you use that quote in your response)

my section II preparation:

i have written one creative story incorporating the idea of a journey (girl goes on a bushwalk dealing with the death of her mother).

i have also written one feature article on the importance of journeys to the Australian psyche.

hopefully i can adapt at least part of either of those to the question....
