lol Actually it may not be an geniune indicator of how dumb/smart a person is because the results may be affected by other factors e.g. motivational levels or illness at that point in time. An IQ test would be more accurate :p
not necessarily. if the person is motivated, than that shows he should be able to transfer those skills into the workforce. Furthermore, this isn't high school, where rote learning gives you high marks. University is all about critical analysis, and to get Ds and HDs, you have to be intelligent.

Marks are primarily used for cut-off or differentiation purposes.

For example, if you're a recruitment manager who has to screen 500 applications, the most logical basis of screening is to institute a mark cutoff than to read through 500 resumes.

On the other hand, applicants can use marks as a point of differentiation vs. other applicants. If you have an HD average you are more gifted academically than others.

after all it is a good measure of how motivated you were for 3-5 years. it shows your competitive spirit and ability to use critical thinking and time management skills. plus, uni is free training for the company :)

I think I heard my sister say that although most private businesses don't put too much stock in uni marks. the government does. So if you wanna be a public servant and turn out like Ruddbot, it helps to have good uni marks.

To be a management consultant you will need a D average or above. The same goes for investment banking. At P&G, although marks aren't the main deciding point, they'll still cut off people if they have bad grades, or haven't shown improvement. Most of the banks cut off people below a credit average.

Marks do matter regardless of the sector.

Yeah definitely, you can't get a job based on marks alone, but many companies still cut candidates off based on marks. I know a few students who had loads of work experience and extracurricular stuff, but management consulting firms wouldn't even look at them because of their credit averages. There's one in my brands Group Project, atm, in that situation

guys someone tell me is the GPA for postgrad study high...
cause thats what i am most worried about :/
depends what you mean by postgrad. many masters courses such as MBAs at prestigious unis won't take you based on marks alone. They want you to have work experience first.

didn't you want to be in HR?

in first semester, my best marks were in political economy and industrial relations. based on your reasoning I've decided to also teach at TAFE

Re: Semester 1 Chatter Thread

why do you need to major in psychology? why don't you do just the subjects you're interested in.

I love it when the uni tells me what to do.

"Megan, you must do ed psych, and these three primary ed subjects. Then you can choose something pretty for yourself"

Re: Semester 1 Chatter Thread

isn't the E&B way exactly the same as the Arts way, as of this year?

and you're too dumb for psychology, but not too dumb to get a 99UAI and decent marks at uni?

Nope. It's 1 more subject to go, and I found a bludgy one to do.

Financial maths.

EDIT: Plus this means that after next semester I can call myself a scientist.
