Mixed feelings on the issue. With the school certificate fast becoming (if it already hasn't) a general certificate the SC Mathematics exam is exactly that general, basic and the bare essentials to maths.

On the same token it almost seems pointless doing the advanced course if at the end you end up doing the same test as everyone else. Although with that being said you will more then likely get a better mark, although again this isn't always the case because a lot of the general questions in the SC aren't covered in the Advanced Mathematics course it is assumed students know and understand these basics. Then on the other side doing Advanced Mathematics also means that the highly capable students are given a taste at an advanced mathematics course and can excel and be prepared somewhat for mathematics in years 11 and 12.

I think maybe two test or splitting up the school certificate paper. One paper\section that each of the mathematics courses do, filled with all the basic mathematics operations for life etc. Then have the second half the paper\second tailored to each of the streams....seems like a much better system of testing I think.

If you're referring to the SC, then NO! Cuz then smart ppl cant ace it like most can right now, or at least score a band 6.

For the normal skool exams, that's wut we do right now. We have a core paper (5.1) which everyone must do. Then there is 5.2 for int. and adv., and 5.3 for adv only...

Yeah, i agree. Two separate papers should be placed for Advanced Maths, and another one for Intermediate. Thats why i believe that most adv. students "struggled" yesterday cause most questions werent related to what we had learnt this yr.

I think it should be across the board, like it is. That way they don't need to scale anything. None of the advanced students I know had any problems, after all, they should know all the work from the 3 levels.
EDIT: So yeah, basically the same reasons as Exphate's.

I'm in Advanced and I don't think so...some of the maths test was even hard for me so I don't see how the others would cope. Most of the people in my grade sat there for 2 hours cos they didn't know any of the answers.

Either split it Advanced and then Intermediate/Standard...or make it of a standard level =D

What my school does is there is a common paper and advance and intermediate have a different part B paper.

Nah. That shouldn't happen. One test for all, it's much simpler. And we should set one standard of maths for the entire state, some people are just better at it than others.

I think there should be a very small section of the advanced course deticated to the basic skills that are in the SC. Two papers would be a hassel, but I felt that I really struggled with the test. Including some of the standard course would have helped me alot.

By the way, what do they learn in intermediate and standard?
Intermediate dont have harder stuff like quadratic equations, polynimials, logs, and deductive geometry. And theirs less tricky question i think.

I did advanced maths in year 10. While the SC paper is missing a lot of stuff from that course i found it no disadvantage. After all if your an advanced maths student you should be able to adapt to the stimulus/question. I think the standardised test is a good idea because you get compared to the rest of the state before the HSC years. However it sucks a little studying 2 years for things that won't be in the paper. So maybe if its a 1.5 hour test there could be 1 hour of standardised paper (30 minutes of no calculator, 30 minutes calculator) and then 30 minutes of course specific stuff. But the downside to this idea would be then that the papers would have to scale because an intermediate 90 would be better than a standard 90, therefore complicating the testing process.

i think its mad coz all of us advance students hammer it, dont see why u can complain about it, if u want a challenge wait till next year and do 4-unit....

That's the reason why you are doing advanced- becaues you're better. Note, learning harder stuff won't be much of an advantage to an "easy" exam.
