hey ppl, i've posted here recently n got some good responses but i need reassurance regarding my shitty trial marks.

i used to have really good marks the first half of the year in high 80's and low 90's. but then after the first semester i started to slip and my marks are falling into 70's and a few 80's.

and now i had done my trial exams. all my marks were in the 70's and i studied very hard for them. it feels like whether i study or not i will get a 70 anyway. there's no improvement in me and my parents and i were thinking about putting aside my atar goal, but inside i feel so guilty and desperate. i have an atar goal of anything 95+ and i an starting to think that i overestimated myself

my trial marks and overall ranks are plain jane, a lot of them remained the same or went lower. i go to a regular public school btw:

maths ext2 71 4/8 (deviation is ridiculous it was 96 94 89 71 then everyone failed after)
maths ext1 75 5/8
chemistry ??? not a good rank anyway
english standard 72 no idea of my rank but everybody sucks in this cohort
biology 78 around the top 10
pdhpe 71 30/100 something

will the hsc be that big in determining my atar considering these results? like if i were to absolutely smash the hsc would i achieve the goal? my parents think i need to give up bc no matter what effort i put none of it shows. and im planning on med, my ucat is coming too which i feel decent about. my dad thinks the ucat is pointless for me considering my marks at school.

NOTE: yes i am fully aware there are postgrad methods of getting into medicine. ideally i dont want to go down that path however the option is always there. i just want to know generally if my atar goal is still possible?

does the hsc really affect my atar that much? my parents think i need to give up bc no matter what effort i put none of it shows. and im planning on med, my ucat is coming too. my dad thinks the ucat is pointless for me considering my marks at school.
you really wanna give up with 3 months to go?

mate come off it lol. We got the HSC to clutch up even more now

also smash out ur ucat yeh

trust me, when you finish an exam block after throwing the kitchen sink at it, life will be extremely chill after that

even if you don't get the right marks for undergraduate entry i think u can still transfer into med through uni doing a postgraduate degree so i think the end goal is still achievable, you will need to do well in uni to achieve this pathway though

i suggest u don't give up on ur atar goal even if u get a bad ucat bc at least when u get ur atar u know u gave it ur all

that being said i think it would be quite difficult to get into undergrad med esp considering how competitive it is

if ur fixated on med to the extent u would rather not do any other career u should try for postgrad med but keep in mind gamsat is much more difficult to study and do well in compared to ucat

i know that the alternatiive pathway for med is always available, however ideally i would wanna get in straight away

tbh that ATAR goal of 95+ looks kinda unrealistic with those grades and considering u said u go to normal public school

but but but if u absolutely grind these 2 months and get a really high external mark even a 96 would be possible. its just how passionate you are about it

getting straight into med is super hard. i go to a top 5 school and know people who got around a score of 3020 in their UCAT. they even know that they'll surely get an ATAR above 99 but most of them are still unsure if they'll get into med. it is really hard and you have to be flexible with what route you wanna pick. at the end of the day you'll still get into med and thats what matters.

Man I feel you as a guy who has failed a lot of exams but, I am not going to lie to you and tell you these marks are good. Look just grind as much as you can these 2 months. If you get in you get in. If this is truly what you want to do then I don't think you should give up. Just keep on going, you have nothing to lose. Once you recognise this I assure you will do well, just don't give up :)

I don't mean to sound harsh, but speaking honestly getting into med directly with those marks is highly unlikely, because you don't have the marks that would be required to get a 95+ ATAR. You need to be getting mostly band 6s and band 5s to get that that type of ATAR.

In saying this, you shouldn't just give up on trying to get the best mark you can. You've worked for the whole year and there is only a few months left so no point in giving up. Maybe it might not be enough for medicine, but you should have back up options for degrees. Then maybe later if you are still interested in pursuing this route you can go for trying to get into postgrad medicine. If you don't do your best then you are limiting your options in getting into these other degrees as well.

for usyd yes, which is practically impossible like fr my tutor got 99.4 and they didnt take her in lmao.

for unsw u need minimum 97, and wsu u need 95 but i get extra points there for being in a gws region and having some stuff going on at home so around 93.

i know dux of my school got into med at wsu with 98 right after.

Depends where you are applying. Some unis have higher ATAR requirements such as UNSW, USYD and others have lower for example WSU is around 95.

regarding med:
there are so many med schools in australia, interview is a big one in determining your offer

regarding atar:
i truly think trials are just that hard. it’s your first exposure to long exams (For the record, my chemistry trial mark was pretty bad as well). It’s important that you know whether u didn’t do well because you don’t understand at all, or you just haven’t revised properly. Then go through the past papers methodologically.

BUT ENGLISH is just the most IMPORTANT!!! Memorizing some essays can elevate your English mark by a lot, and elevating your English mark can drag up your ATAR by a lot

I know realistically to get into usyd its 99.95 with a 2/3 chance iirc, unsw is like min 99.2ish with a solid ucat, wsu weigh the ucat verbal reasoning highly so u probs only need like 98ish.
