amphiprotic = amphoteric?
:confused:

lol.. I always get confused with those...

Amphiprotic: The ability to behave as either Bronsted L acid or bronsted l base

examples: water, Hydrogen carbonate ion

so in other words an amphiprtoic subtance can act either as a proton donor or proton acceptor

Amphoteric: Oxides that react with acids to form salts, but which also react with alkalis ...Amphoteric oxides can be neutralised by either an acid or a base

examples: Al2O3, ZnO, PbO, SnO and As2O3

Amphoteric substances are a sub-category of amphiprotic substances.

An amphoteric substance can act as a base or an acid, while an amphiprotic substance can donate or accept a proton, be it an acid-base reaction or not.

the site says they are the same...?????
Well! Isn't the site a silly little thing.

Don't believe it! If they were the same thing... why are there two different terms? Why are there two different terms? (which are confusingly similar)

simple explanation:

Amphiprotic means the ability of a substance to act as both an acid ad a base in solution.
Amphoteric oxides are those which react with acids to form salts but also react with alkalis.

^^^ Referring to the amphiprotic definition - but you have to explain how they're acting as an acid or base, otherwise it just sounds the same as amphoteric substances.

Specifically, amphiprotic substances can donate OR accept protons (H+), but not necessarily in an acid/base reaction.

ANYWAY, as "amphoteric" is not in the syllabus... :rolleyes:

even if its not in the syllabus, or even if we don't notice it in the syllabus, it is STILL tested in the hsc, ive seen it in past papers (after the syllabus was amended in 2002(?))
