Sometimes not meeting much new friends before the first few weeks is a good thing. Especially if you are proned to join some bad company... Invest your time wisely.

You really need to just sit next to someone in a lecture/tute and introduce yourself. You can't go through uni expecting people to come to YOU. Whoever told cockmira that is an idiot. Yeah if the person doesn't feel like talking or it doesn't go over well, who cares? A little bruised dignity, but meh. You'll live.

From experience most people you say hi to will be happy to at least exchange pleasantries. They're probably feeling similarly shy the prospect of breaking the ice with people and'll be glad you took the initiative.

Yeah, take it from me. I'm shy as well and socialising has never been my forte'. Actually, I don't really have uni 'friends'. Acquaintances, yes, but no one I've really forged a lasting bond with. Meh.

I'm socially retarded and can still manage to start a conversation usually. I find it's easier to approach people in tutorials because the small group setting is less intimidating. Just sit next to someone, say hello and introduce yourself. It's really not that difficult.

Step 1: Say hello and smile
Step 2: Talk about the outside world
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!

... j/k :p

but the first 2 steps should be a good start..

if you cant think of anything to talk about, you could start off with everyday life...

U: "How long does it take you to get to uni?"
P: "Not very long from <insert city>"
U: "Oh, <insert city> is interesting, i heard <blah blah>"
P: "Yea, <blah blah> and <blah2>"

try string things together.... but dont think too hard, try let things flow.. and forget about being shy, try to think "i've got nothing to lose if i try talk, but ive got something to lose if i am"

maybe you dont understand me lundass, i never really wanted people too approach me at all (maybe a few) but not like a mass gathering because i tell you now youd get distracted from actual work and uni isnt like school where you can miss a few weeks work and still know whats going on

Yes I really needed the lowdown on how uni works. Having been there 2 weeks, I imagine you're quite the expert now.

How do you find the courage to do that though - I just can't chat up anybody, I've tried but it usually fails.
Don't be a narcissist, and don't bother talking to people outside of labs/tuts. You'll never see them again. Actually, for that matter, what are the chances of seeing any of these uni people 10 years after you've leftI mean, after they go into their crappy law degree and sit there grinding through paperwork whilst you're having the time of your life spreading germs in laboratories or bringing knowledge to a new wave of people, you won't see them again.

Alas, I digress, I suppose I'll join in here, I've made nil "friends" however most people I've seen have been very friendly, with a few exceptions. In labs I usually go out of my way to be friendly and helpful, and people are friendly and helpful back, albeit some are quite weird :p. It might be that you're not shy, you're just not very outgoing, like myself. Take your time, because you've got 3 years there (4 for me) and unless you're desperately loney and/or insecure about lonelyness I doubt anything is really going to affect your future in the first session. I guess if you're really super dooper eager you could head down to that unibar dealie and buy everyone a drink, but that seems pointless. I prefer the relaxed atmosphere neare the library lawn/commerce courtyard. By the way, I've noticed that Friday is by far the coolest day to be at uni, everything is so quiet and groovy.

And don't talk to people from the eastern suburbs, they suck, they're all snobby asses. The rest of Sydney is where it's at.

That's a completely wrong attitude to take in Uni. You are better of making more friends if you want to do well in uni. You will never be able to get help with assignments, discuss work or get notes that you missed if you don't make friends in all your courses. Plus there is group work in every single course you take in the near future, especially in commerce, if you don't make friends and all organise to attend the same tutorial you will end up having to join a group of strangers only to find that they are lazy and doesn't really care if they fail everything.

Also, if your friend has done a course before you, you can borrow notes, or even a textbook saving plenty of money. I've lent plenty of textbooks away and borrowed many more.
