Was considering transferring into this mid semester.
Could anyone who is enrolled help me out

1) How difficult is the course?
2) how many hours a week?
3) is the majority practical (coding) or theory/social issues
4) what language is used?
5) is it possible to combine the course?

Travel time scared me away from this course initially as it would take me 1-1.5 hours each way to get to unsw

Dont worry about travel time, there's some ppl who come out from the blue mountains area. It takes me 1.5-2 hours to get to uni, its not that bad cause u can sleep on the bus or train.

Yeah it's not that bad, I live about 1hr 20min from uni by train & bus, and I usually revise on the train.

Reasonably difficult (so far). Takes lost of your time ...

20.5 hrs this semester, including 12 hrs of maths.

3) is the majority practical (coding) or theory/social issues
At the moment it is coding and maths, with lots of "style" involved. Socail issues come latter, but they are a small part of the course.

4) what language is used?
"Haskell" for first semester, then "C++"

5) is it possible to combine the course?
Yes. Currently combines with arts or science. Combination with commerce is on the drwing board.


In regards to travel time it takes me 1.5 hrs to get to uni, but it's not too bad ...

Well actually Discrete is MUCH harder than Higher maths.

So true, it's not like HSC maths it's a entirely weird sort of maths (if you can call it maths ). I too reckon Math1141 is easier than discrete maths (although I do Discrete Maths 1090 which is an abridged version of Discrete maths that only EE student do, not 1081 which the full discrete maths course that software & computer engineers have to do). Can't wait till Semester 2, when I finish from discrete maths.

Right now it's what McLake said, but next semester it goes down to around 13.

The language depends on the class you're taking.
In Comp 1A, which we're doing now, it's Haskell. In Comp 1B (next semester), it'll be C.

I take as long as you and I live near Sutherland. I blame the local bus company, who I heard from an old lady (the ones that always strike a conversation waiting for a late bus) are siphoning employees from CentreLink.

Does anyone know the cutoff to get into this course (2k4), and for the fasttrack thingo combined with MComm, do you have to apply for it in 4th year?

Cutoff 2k3 was 91.75-ish.

You can choose to do the MComm in 4th yeaar, but you can take some of the required courses as electives in previous years, so there is an advantage in knowing beforehand if you want to do it.

*phew*, if the cut off stays like that I wont have to put to much effort in to obtain it

I will almost definately will want to do the MComm in 4th, so doing some of the electives for that will be better in doing the commerce course, but will it disadvantage yourself in the BSE course?
