The general consensus is that BA (media and comm) at USYD is crap. and anyway, I want to go to UTS and do BA Communications (journalism).

BUT, the question is: if i successfully receive a USYD (5000 a year) scholarship, would you recommend that I go to USYD?

What would you do?

Honestly it depends what you want out of your studies - if you want to focus on practical and rigorous study of journalism then a scholarship for a far more arts based degree won't do much for you.

If however you are genuinely interested in the arts (and perhaps the sciences and government subjects as well) then USYD will offer you a far better place to study those at, and with a scholarship that would be a definite plus (though if you were truly interested in the arts, I'd be wondering why you're not applying for BA or BA (Advanced)).

In the end though, it doesn't matter which way you go because you can always transfer from one to the other after your first year. Diplomas can always fill in the gaps as well if you find an aspect of your education insufficiently covered (e.g DipArts or DipJourn etc.).

Sorry for this, but could you expand ont he diploma aspect of things. Minor and majors and also the difference in Ba and BA advanced.

Apologies in advanced for a stupid question but I'm still a bit unclear.

Also, I should just let go of a scholarship? As an ordinary uni student, is chucking $5000 a year not deemed stupid? My friends say let go of the schoarship and go to UTS (where there is no damn scholarship!!!)

It depends on if you want the USYD degree, if you do then go for it, but if you don't want what the USYD degree offers then the scholarship won't do anything for you.

And here are your definitions (they're very rough though):

Majors and Minors:
A Major is basically your specialisation that you study throughout our degree, and that you expect to be printed on your piece of paper when you leave. A minor(or sub-major) is basically where you study a subject for more than the one subject but not up to major level (usually at least 3 subjects though its not really clearly defined at alot of unis anymore).

Diplomas @ UTS
These are basically one year programs following the graduation of a humanities based degree [some other stuff might be accepted too]. Its similar to the core major for each strand in undergraduate communications [except faster - obviously].

BA @ UTS
This is not a normal BA, its a modified one [BA Communications] in which you will do 4 core subjects in your first year + 4 subjects for your major per year (including first). You also get some electives - between 4 [if you do it all at UTS] and 6[if you do it all cross-institution or cross-faculty]. It can also be combined with Law or International Studies at UTS or any degree at MQ (if you make the correct applications).

Diplomas @ USYD
USYD offers Diplomas for both undergraduates and graduates [though I'm only gonna talk undergrad ones here]. If you study an non Arts degree at USYD or any degree at another university then you are able to apply for a Diploma in Arts(or Languages or Social Sciences) which is essentially an entire arts major studied on its own - minimum of 3 years, and will have to be part time.

BA @ UTS
The BA at USYD is an excellent program for someone who wants to study a wide range of areas including just about any arts major, you can also study most science or commerce subjects even up to the level of major (as long as you have an arts based major as well). USYD also offers several modified BAs such as BA Languages(four year program in which you take a languages major + go overseas, take a 2nd major in pretty much anything], BA Media & Communications, BA Informatics[study IT within the context of arts - similar to Info Management at UTS in purpose], BA Advanced [where you start with second year Arts subjects and do honours as your third year] and BA Psychology [where you study an accredited four year psych program + arts subjects]. It can also be combined with Education, Law, Science, Commerce, Music Studies and Nursing at USYD and pretty much any degree at MQ.
