Hi,
I graduated high school this year and have been aiming for USYD space engineering, but missed out on the previous lowest selection rank by 0.05 ATAR points :/

My options right now are:

1.USYD aeronautical, then transfer to space after second year.

This requires a 75 WAM which is apparently achievable, but I’m not sure whether it’ll guarantee entry or how competitive it is. I’ve heard different things from different USYD representatives.

2.UNSW aerospace, and pick space electives.

As a University, I think I like UNSW so much more. It seems to have a better culture and student life, is more focused on engineering and has nicer facilities.
I don't know if the Space part of the degree is just branding on USYD’s end. It’s only 3 units of space, and the rest is a normal aeronautical degree.

At UNSW, I received two different insights. One that Space at USYD was comparable to UNSW aerospace with space-related electives, and the second that USYD is indeed more specialized in Space and should be my pick if that is what I want to pursue (which it is).

If it wasn't for the space specialisation, I don't think I would go to USYD - it's the only thing attracting me to it at this stage.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi there, I graduated from usyd aero(space) many years ago.

Are you eligible for bonus points? https://www.sydney.edu.au/study/how...sion-pathways/academic-excellence-scheme.html

If not, then transferring within usyd is fairly straightforward (at least it was in my time). For unsw, as far as I know, you pick mechanical and then major in aerospace 3rd year, so the unsw program is a lot more general, whereas usyd is more focused on aero/space. I also thought that unsw does not offer space electives, but that might have changed since I graduated.

See my previous posts on this topic for more info:

Happy to answer any questions. Feel free to PM me.

if you’ve only missed the ATAR by 0.05 I think you should still put it as first preference for this round, as there is a chance you will get it.
