Looks like ex-Nationals Senator Julian McGauran's defection to the Liberals is really beginning to manifest into a shithole of situation for the Coalition.

Good riddance to Lindsay. I like Joyce, and I don't care if he is a nut. The upper house is supposed to be the house of states, a house of review etc, not a pawn for the political parties. A senator is supposed to do what is best for their state, not what they're party wants. A politician is supposed to be answerable to their electorare. At least Joyce seems to remember this.

“Surely, as a senator for this state, you should be demanding that it goes somewhere else”. And I made the point that, no, I do wear – we all do, in the government, wear two hats. Yes, I am a senator for South Australia but I’m also a member of the national government that believes that the responsible thing for this country is to put, in this case, radioactive waste where it’s safest. That happens to be in the outback of South Australia.

Oh joy of joys, no more coalition.

As thrilling as the prospect is, I doubt the Coalition will split. The Nationals are too spineless to take a stand. They strike me as a party of self-serving bastards, posing as representatives of rural regions but only taking part in the Coalition for petty purposes of self-advancement. Joyce came onto the scene as a Nationals idealist, that's why his party colleagues hate him. I like him too, he's not afraid to risk the whole Coalition in order to extrat some benefits for his region. That's pretty self-serving in itself but at least he's doing it for his constituents.

It would be hard for the Liberals to maintain a majority without the Coalition. We don't know how many current Nationals voters would vote if the National party was disbanded. While it is likely many would turn Liberal, I think an idependant candidate would do well espousing a line of representation for his specific rural area.

The Liberal party almost holds the houes of reps in its own right (like 2-3 seats short or something), and the use of joint tickets for the senate in most states means there's probably more nats in the senate than there otherwise would be.
