You have to pay for the full version of the creature creator. Pretty stupid, hey? But even the trial version apparently has about 25% of the total number of body pieces and customisation, which is a lot.

The scary thing is that these created creatures are all uploaded to the "Sporepedia" database and will be automatically downloaded by the game to use as competing civilisations. So you're going to get penis monsters running around with a seemingly unsatiated thirst for sex.
