Star Wars sparks US political storm

The new Star Wars film is causing a political storm in the United States, with one group calling for a boycott of the film, which they say is unpatriotic.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith includes a scene in which Darth Vader tells his former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi that he is either with him or against him.

Some US activists are comparing Darth Vader's actions to those of President George W Bush in persuading legislators to adopt the Patriot Act.

Critics say the act imposed limits on civil liberties after the September the 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks.

And conservative group called Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood is calling for a boycott of the film.

But Star Wars creator George Lucas insists that the film's story was written long before the war on terror took centre stage in US politics.

That is the most saddest thing i have ever seen? Dont people ever stop thinkin about politics, im sick of it so is da hype of terrorism

Or the other way around...

Recall George Lucas tried suing Reagan for his use of the term "star wars" to describe his missile defence program.

Whos o say it wasnt....

alludes to left wing conspiracy theories as numerous as right wing ones (like the anti-american hollywood conspiracy theory).

Though I still think for Lucas to be committing a crime he would have needed to have known thrity years ago about the war on terror conspiracy.

Oh and the whole thing is ridiculous. The with us or against us maxim has been a part of popular culture for a long time. George Bush's speech writer were using it as a catchy one-liner which linked George Bush t the intrepid heroes of pop culture who have fought the good fight against evils as varied as local crime, communism, oppressive labour practices, apatheid, etc etc.

Cleary the oh my god hollywood is anti-american are complete idiots only dimly aware of their surroundings who are angry that whilst watching a movie they were stung out of their stupor by a percieved slight against a man and a party to whom they instinctevly swear allegiance.

1) This is almost as funny as the group of people whom threatened to boycott The Two Towers because the name of the movie was (according to them) an attempt to make money from September 11th.

2) To all the morons who started flaming the Republicans, the "Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood" is most likely some lame group full of nobodies and hacks. Just because they are Republican voters != sanction from the Republicans.

btw, is this a joke thread?

That reaction is way out of proportion, but you can't ignore the political references in the film... "This is not a real democracy" and so on.

When i seen that scen i actually thought about Bush.

I think its just funny conincidence that it would show that the nature of the character Jedi would not think in the "you either a or b".

I agree entirely. Groups like this shouldn't be given any media exposure. Ignore the idiots and they'll quickly go away. In any case, this was from MSN Today news, so it's hardly worth talking about.

Edit: Er.. what's The Daily Times Argonaut? Is it a respected Pakistani broadsheet?
