State ranks are determined using students' HSC marks, which are the final marks they receive in their subjects, comprised of an Assessment Mark and an Examination Mark, each worth 50% of the HSC mark.

A student's chance of receiving a state rank also depends on Course Candidature and Maximum place in Top Achievers, as seen in the table below:

There are of course instances where students are equal on the highest HSC marks in a course. In such a case, the following process is used to determine the recipient(s):
  1. take an average of each student's Examination Mark and Assessment Mark after alignment to performance bands, each to one decimal place.
  2. take an average of each student's Examination Mark and Assessment Mark before alignment to performance bands, each to two decimal places.
  3. if an Extension course, use the marks awarded for other courses in the subject area.
I hope this helps! :D

They should really base state ranks on only externals imo. The final exam is the fairest representation of you as a student. Plus, everyone sits the exact same exam.
only the internal rank affects state rank. If two people from the same school tie on the HSC exam but one is ahead of the other internally, then the one that is ahead should be getting a higher SR

what if person 1 is ranked internally higher than person 2 but gets lower in the hsc exam than person 2, what happens then? does person 1 still get a higher state rank

I think you missed my point. And yes I do understand that if they based sr on only the HSC then it would be fair to assume a lot of people will be getting those equal high marks which would create a dilemma on who should receive sr.

person 2 may not be getting a state rank but i think is more likely to receive one (but it is possible especially in higher ranked schools - i have heard of 2nds internally getting an SR)
they would have a higher raw unaligned HSC mark => higher in the rankings according to the 2nd criterion

I believe the student who comes first in the state for a particular subject receives a call from the Premier informing them of this outcome a week prior to the release of HSC results. The remaining students who have also achieved a state rank are informed of this outcome on the day HSC results are released, although they do not receive calls. This will be concurrent with the release of the HSC Honour Roll in the case of HSCninja and the HSC Top Achievers in Course in the case of NESA.
I hope this helps! :D

Makes sense!

Does it appear on the results page though? (i.e. would it say HSC MARK 100 for 3U, 3rd in State)
Sorry, I thought that by "HSC results page" you were referring to the HSC Top Achievers in Course list.

I have never seen an HSC results page showing that a student achieved a state rank in one or more of their subjects, which would make me believe that state ranks do not appear on the HSC results page. 🤔

If I'm not wrong, I believe a state rank is also based on a student's assessment mark, so they would have to be very confident on a 100 assessment mark.
no its not dependent on internal mark, as i presume OPs friend is rank 1 internally meaning they will get their external mark for their internals, given they come first externally aswell.

it does not matter what mark they got internally given that they came first internally.

State rank is not the same as a first in state. To be first in state (i.e. where you actually get notified to be given an award) it is almost a pre-requisite you come first internally. However, that is not necessary for a non-first state rank (where there is no notification, you just find out yourself in the Top Achievers list), especially if many students in your school are clustered near the top of the state.
