Hey guys so a lot of my family friends that done the HSC chose 2u math up to year 11 and dropped it to gen in yr 12 as to get a competitive advantage during HSC with a lot more knowledge. Is this true, that by doing adv math in year 11 u will be very good at gen in yr 12?? I am looking into doing similarly because i not that keen in adv math for HSC.

Not necessarily, I'm pretty sure general maths and 2U maths covers different syllabus points - try out 2U first for prelims then see how you go from there for HSC

I don't see how this is strategic at all. General mathematics and 2u mathematics is a massive jump and unlike 3u and 2u, the topics in both subjects don't clash...

No not necessarily

Why would you want to drop down to General for that reason

If so you're only digging yourself a hole as you may perform well in it but the mark will be scaled down

But my best piece of advice is that you don't base your decision on what your family friends have done in the past

^ That decision is meant for you

Not necessarily, it's not what I'd call a 'strategic' move either. The content is so different in 2U and General. If you're capable of 2U, definitely do it and don't base your decisions on other what other people have done. This is your HSC, and if you can get good marks in 2U I see no reason why you'd drop to General.

As everyone else said, don't listen to what your family says - you know yourself better than them. If you believe you have the capability to do well in 2U, stay. It's one of those subjects where hard work is enough for a band 6, albeit with some curveballs in the HSC paper.

And no, general maths and 2U are completely different beasts; the former is more inclined towards applied maths, whereas the latter is moreso for the pure enjoyment of seeing things come together.

They are completely different. HOWEVER, personally for me, I regret not dropping to general maths, because after I did 2u and looked at the Gen Maths paper, it looked like a walk in the park.
Although some topics are different and new, they are not substantially hard to learn, so yeah, if you want an advantage, go ahead and do 2u then drop, but if you're doing relatively well in 2u, then stay.

My friend who got a 92 said the amount of scaling placed on 2u and 3u isn't worth the amount of work. So i'd suggest if you are comfortable; go with general.

No, the course are not similar at all...

You'd be better of doing 3unit, then dropping to 2 unit.

How are you going at mathematics at the moment?

You need to consider whether in uni you wish to pursue a degree or later in your career in a science or maths related field-if you think you MAY want to pursue a career in either of those fields, whether it be a teacher, researcher, lecturer, scientist, etc... I strongly would NOT recommend you to drop down to general maths, because you will find it extremely hard to cope with maths in your first year uni without a strong maths foundation, where first year maths subjects is often compulsory for many different kinds of degrees in science(depending on what major you intend to do), engineering etc...

There isnt really much crossover between General and 2U. 2U/3U/4U are much more algebra based, whereas General is more or less practical maths (financial maths, statistics etc). A better strategy would be to do 3U then drop to 2U, because they have good crossover and 3U does help you a lot with 2U. That being said, dont go into Year 11 planning to drop down - if you are good at 3U then it is in your best interests to keep it. I wanted to keep 3U for Year 12, but ultimately it was consuming too much of my time because I wasnt that good at it.
