I don't think anyone has said there are no opportunities, its just a less passive set of opportunities (as in you actually have to specifically socialise, as in staz's example). If you make the effort then I'm sure you'll make friends, just don't expect it to happen automatically.

Half true actually - the course is about 85% women but oddly enough I haven't met any gay guys ... except for social inquiry (which is full of queer activists and womyn). :(

this seems kinda generalising..

it depends on the people... not the uni..

if your same friends from uts were at usyd.. dey still be chililin around at usyd...

its not da uni .. its da crowd.. every uni has people who just goto class and then go home.. and every uni has those people who hang around after class and socialise...

I disagree. Culture also plays a role in it. Just like some workplaces foster communication and interaction, whilst in others you won't get to know much about your co-workers. UTS and USYD have different cultures.

Kami, I'm taking a PR class here. There's about 90 people in it. 4 guys. 1 of them gh3y. Pity us 3 non-gh3y guys all have girlfriends.

I find that hard to believe. USYD law is veeery sociable. Everyone seems to know each other. I'm almost jealous that I don't do law for that reason. It's a very tight-knit bunch who go to the same parties, hang out together, attend the same classes, etc. The only factor that I can identify that could have affected those last 2 years, is that networking plays a more important role in your final years of uni, and thus he had more reason to be sociable.

But really USYD law is unparalleled thanks to a very good society that organizes camps, lots of parties, etc.

Hey man thanks for your opinion! It's a shame you know jack shit about the law community at UTS and have automatically assumed USYD law is greater than all else which i'm sure has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you go there.
I'm sure as marketing manager of boredofstudies, computing society director not to mention a 'pro' gamer, i'm sure you get heaps of time to socialise with the 'unparalleled' society at USYD law, lucky because there is no way in hell anyone can be more social than a 'very good' society that organizes camps AND parties.
Hey my cousin making friends at UTS probably had nothing to do with the last 2 years of a law degree having an emphasis on networking but rather, the people at UTS:LAW don't have their heads so far up their arses and/or are eurphorically stumbling around the university at the wonder of sandstone buildings, perhaps with a quick glance to the ugly UTS building. Because we all know how important the look of a building is to the education gained inside it. Obviously the smartest people in the world are teletubbies with their green igloo surrounded by vast fields of finely cut grass and a smiley face sun.

No, I was having a go at your proposition that he met a lot more people in his first few weeks at UTS than what he met at USYD. The reason I found fault in it was because you said pretty much asserted that USYD law students aren't social and it's far easier to make friends at UTS. Whilst I'm sure that you will make friends in Law if you go to UTS, I'm also sure that you'll make friends if you go to USYD. When this is simply not so (see a continuation to another one of your quotes)

i) I am no longer marketing manager for bos
ii) It's not a computing society. It's the Commerce Society. Also, I was the Social Director, not the Director
iii) Yes, I do play video games too much, even by my own admission
If you'd like to use the fact that I have a very busy life to assert that I have no social life, go ahead. The things you listed only skim the surface of how busy my lifestyle is. You missed out on listing my numerous prizes and scholarships. My distinction average [and high distinction average in marketing]. My studio manager role for the Sydney Uni Radio Station over the past 2 years. How I'm running for a Union Director's position next year. How I organized Re-O-Day (the 2nd semester O-Week). How I've worked up to 4 different jobs at one time. How a large non-profit organization in America wants to use my advertising and slogan as part of their campaign. I could continue.
Yet, I manage to maintain a very active social life. There'll be more than enough people on these forums who will vouch for me.
Apologies to others, as that was quite a pretentious wank by me.

And I listed one of the reasons for USYD Law students being sociable and close as the society. There are many others. If you think I'm biased towards anything USYD, you are very wrong. I have always pointed people towards UTS-based media & communications/journalism/etc degrees, as they are far superior over the USYD ones. Just like I'll point people at MAQ who wish to do history or management.
Again, approach a USYD law student and ask them to name their friends from USYD. They'll name a hundred who also study law, from different years. They'll also know what a lot of them are doing on the weekend. It really is a close community, which I envy being a Business student (although ComSoc is trying to change that, which we started with our First Year Camp - a huge success, and some bos members attended it).

Aesthetics do have a correlation with happiness. I'm incredibly happy going to class at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School as it's so clean, beautiful, technologically advanced, etc. I'm far happier attending lectures than I've ever been at USYD, despite being more interested in some of the subjects I've taken back home. People who live in nicer environments also lead happier lives. There is a lot of evidence for this.
Are you suggesting that the quality of UTS law is better than USYD/UNSW/MAQ law? I won't make an argument for any of these schools, never having studied law, but I'm sure that no one is making a case for pretty buildings being more important than education.

Where do you pull this from? Where have I proposed anything? I just relayed what my cousin has told me, as it is relevant to the conversation. It is not upto you to question nor reject whether he actually did or not, because you have no idea. If you don't want to believe it, that good for you, but disagreeing with it directly is simply NOT ON. Then again this is the internet and you will get pricks, I should've allowed for this and not replied.

I never said anything about USYD being more social than UTS.
In the instance I gave, yes it came off as though UTS LAW is alot more social than USYD but as I said in my first post: It depends on the individual. I know plenty of people who have made friends at USYD, From my own experience i've met some very close friends at UTS. I'm not saying its easier in either uni but judging by your replies in this thread you certainly fit the sort of person i described in my 2nd post.

Step back boys,
Stazi has a high distinction average in marketing. Your achievements amaze me greatly as i know how long the line is to become studio manager for the uni radio station. Good to see that your e-buddies will vouch for your social life, because e-credibility is ever so important. I stated simply what I drew from your signature, what that asserts is upto the forum members. There is no need to reassure yourself of your social life on here.

Hey man, thats fantastic that USYD students know what each other are doing on the weekends. To be honest, I don't really give a shit, I am not attacking the social lives of USYD students but for some reason you feel the need to defend it. Is it because it is possible that someone DIDN'T get on well with people at university of sydney law students but did at UTS?

Oh good then, I love the glasshouse feel of UTS Building 10, the old style market feel of building 5 and the art gallery feel of design building 6.

I am extremely happy being so close to the city, vibrant colours line the streets with the latest fashion and small cafe`s throughout give a very cutesy feel. Not to mention hyde park, sydney park all within a 5 minute walk. Hell even University of Sydney grounds are great for a kickback when a few hours are spare.

Which brings me back to the old USYD v UTS building comparison. Have you seen the IT or Engineering or Science faculties at USYD? They are hardly beautiful. I know that If I had to hang around those buildings, I would be a very angry man indeed.

Are you suggesting, I suggested that?
straw man fallacy won't get you far as anyone with half a brain will be able to see through exactly what your saying.

Now now, you are just being silly. For someone with so many achievements who would've thought a little criticism would've touched a nerve.

not necessarily. People still smoke in certain areas around campus. For instance, outside one of the Merewether entrances, on the balcony at Manning, etc.

I really don't know many smokers though, do you? I maybe know three I can think of. Out of the dozens of USYD students I know quite well.
And if you walk past the entrance of Merewether (with the butt bin) you hardly ever see anyone smoking (apart from the security guard). When you do it'd be one of a few people.
I know shitloads of usyd smokers, but then again half the liberals on campus smoke like chimneys...

It's stressful living in a socialist Australia. And whilst i've only had 2 hours of sleep and need to go to my exam, all I'll say is 'e-credit'? 'e-personas'. you do realise that these people live and exist in the world after they log out of the intarnet?

and no, you didn't strike a nerve with you tell me to ROFL or whatever it is you said. I pointed out how you lost all credibility.

And asylum, I knowz  I'll debate more after i finish my exams. Then I am winnrar. I finish uni here.

Seeing as I dont know anyone who actually goes to UTS, I figured this would be the best place to get the general concensus of people who actually go there....

Whats the student life like at UTS? Everyone I've been talking to recently (all of whom go to USYD) go on about how its really hard to actually make friends at UTS....apparantely the lack of any grass or other open areas means that everyone just leaves the campus for lunch etc and there arent really many places where everyone just hangs out and you can meet people. Opposed to Sydney with their giant campus, which is meant to make it easier to meet other people for some reason

Is this true in any way? Have any of you guys been unhappy with the student life/oppurtunities to make new friends at UTS? Or do you reckon its just the same as all the other uni's?

thanks in advance!
You are definitely not the only one who's been told the same thing. I've asked countless people, BoSers can vouch for that, but the bottom line is- it is up to the individual.

If there are two bored people standing a few meters from each other, green grass is going to change there encounter? Well, actually it may give some sort of effect, lol, but that doesn't matter, I would personally go up and say 'hey, how you doing, I'm so and so'.

I'm a person who loves meeting new people and interacting with lots of people. I Couldn't stand being isolated or deprived from communication. and anyways, there is so many different ways to meet people at uni. parties, balls, orientation, etc.

I was originally all for sydney uni, but because of my preferance for a certain uts course, i'm sticking with uts, and hope to make the best of it.

and if anyone ever mentions that uts people have no social life. what bullsh**.

anyways, i can't wait for next year. There are about 6 of the craziest, beautiful, intelligent and fun girls from my school, planning on doing the communications course at uts. i couldn't imagine how it's not going to be fun!
