Dear GLW,
I was wondering if you could justify to me your rationale behind labelling the Jyllands Posten cartoons as racist, because as it stands it would seem that you're just throwing the term about without having any knowledge of its meaning, so let's take a look at the dictionary, shall we?
rac·ism ( rā's*z'əm) pronunciation
n.
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
Ok, so perhaps these catoons could have been prejudiced against Muslims, but let's look deeper, and find the definition of the word "race".
race1 ( rās) pronunciation
n.
1. A local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics.
2. A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the German race.
3. A genealogical line; a lineage.
1 is easily refuted, because the belief in Allah is not inherited.
2 doesn't apply to Muslims either, since there are many different areas where they can be found (the Middle East and South East Asia, for example), and each group of Muslims in the different areas have a different nationality and history.
3, much like 1, does not apply to Muslims.
But what does this all mean?
To spell it out for you simpler socialist types, it essentially means that if I attack Islam, I'm not being racist, much the same as when every issue you attack capitalism, you're not being racist either, because you, like me, are attacking a belief. What is racist, however, is the constant stream of anti-Semitic cartoons (just in case you get confused, I'm referring to the Jews as a race, rather than those who practice Judaism, who may or may not be Jewish) coming out of the Middle East, which you so kindly overlook because noone's burning down embassies over them. I'd suggest that next time you accuse someone of being racist you make sure that it's actually a race they're attacking.
