Hi all,

Just wondering if there is any difference (in terms of ATAR calculations) when it comes to doing your HSC in a good school/selective school or normal school?

Thanks.

school drags you up or down according to quality of cohort. bonus points for living in a poor area apply regardless of school.

If you live in a low-socioeconomic area then your eligible for schemes like Gateway in UNSW, mysydney for UYSD and etc
It dumbs down your ATAR by a lot

Cliche example:
Civil Eng: 92 ->80 ATAR

It doesn't effect your ATAR calculations at all. But if your school cohort is overall doing bad, then it makes it difficult for you to get in the top marks range since 50% of your HSC mark depends on your performance relative to the school. This can be overcome, though, by ranking first in your subjects internally and also in the HSC exam.

Otherwise, some unis drop the ATAR threshold for certain courses to compensate or add adjustment points to your selection rank, not your atar. But this will differ between unis.

Your ATAR will not change. But if you are eligible for certain equity and/or merit schemes, your selection rank may change. This is your ATAR + any adjustment factors. This final number is not publicly available information, and you will only know of your bona fide ATAR.
