Hey guys.
I'm considering taking on a 5th, 2cp unit (Psy240, specifically) this semester, taking my study load up to 14cp. I'm not too hassled as I'm not working this semester so I'll have an extra 2 days up my sleeve, but would like some reassurance nonetheless! :D

Are those extra cp noticable? (I mean, obviously they will be, esp. seeing they're a separate subject) Anyone got any experiences along these lines?

hey skittled.. im doing 14 credit points this semester too.... 3+3+4+4 yepp its not a 5th unit though... just the way my subjects are worth... i hope the extra 2cps don't make a difference

i dont think it'll make a difference to me since im still just doing 4 subjects but taking on a 5th might hurt. So hrrm best to ask someone who's done it before

your not working this semester? wow lucky you... how come? yeah maybe taking on a small 5th unit could be do-able, especially without the burden that is work

Bah, I'm doing 4. For some reason, my marks were better in first sem, when I did 4 units, than second sem. But what can you do.

Here's to us. :toast:

I have done 13cp with 4 subjects and there was no noticable difference because I was still doing the basic 4 subjects. So I hate to say it but I really think that although only 1cp more than what I did, it would be very noticable because it's an extra subject. But if you're not working and you really want to do it, don't let the thought that maybe it will be too much stop you.

Hmm, I don't get the whole 'cp' idea -- HIST243 (4cp) has less reading than LAW114 (3cp).

Which is sort of my point. It's the number of subjects that matters and doing 5 subjects is a lot, where as 4, no matter what the cp value, will be a lot less. With what you said in mind, how do they choose how many cp a subject is worth?

They look at how many subjects you should be doing in your coherent.

Law have a lot of units that must be done, not only because there are a lot of areas of law that must be done (to be qualified), but because there are just a lot of areas of law. Hence, they say 'do x cps' to ensure you do all required areas and required amounts of electives.

However, if I wanted to do a coherent in Ancient History, they know that I'd want to do something specific (New Kingdom Egypt), and may do less subjects in preperation to become more of a specialist.

I think that the more 'all-rounder' coherents, like law, media, etc tend to have subjects with lower cps. (?)

Well having done 17 cp last semester, I think it's not too noticeable if you do have the time to do it. I did get pretty tired at the end, with just the sheer amount I had to remember but I'm sure you'll do fine mate :)

i did 5 units in both semesters last year. At that time psy222 was a yearly (4cp) and psy232 (psy240 is one half of that) was also a yearly worth 3cp. Thing is, everyone agreed that psy232 should have been 4cp (i.e. 2 cp per sem) because of the work load. I found the workload considerably larger than first year, though it hard to know if it was because i was doing more cp and subjects or because it was simply because it was second year and therefore harder.

Skittled, i reckon youll be fine with 5 subjects. If you wont have the factor of work then it should be ok too. If you want i'll let you borrow my psy232 notes as it should be similar this year.
