I pretty much stuff up my half yearlies and my ranks went down my worst was by like 8-9 spots, is it possible to go back up in my ranks with the assessments and trials before the hsc?

Depends in what situation you are in. For example in my Business Studies class even if I slip up once I will lose my spot and never get it back (since top 10 is seriously competitive, with under 2.5/30 marks difference between 1 and 10 overall).

Questions to ask yourself:
1. Do at least 3 people in your class continually get good marks?
A. Yes (Go to Scenario 1)
B. No (Go to question 2)

2. Were you in the top 5 before you hypothetically screwed up?
A. Yes (Go to question 3)
B. No (Go to Scenario 1)

3. Do you think/is there will be a large gap between rank spots in terms of marks?
A. Yes (Go to Scenario 1)
B. No (Go to Scenario 2)

Scenario 1:
You're fucked! Not really, it just means you probably won't get a good rank (top 5).

Scenario 2:
You still have a chance to make it into top 5.

Yes I think I saw Krnofdrg post on here saying he failed his exams with like 40-60% and ended up getting 1st in a couple of the subjects he failed his half yearlies. There are lots of people who've done it before, simply because failure makes them realise they need to try harder and its basically used as a strong force of motivation is all. Just move on and keep studying! (Studying smarter and harder) !

Well my rank before the half yearlies were:

Adv English 11/52
2U Math 9/28
Biology 7/36
Physics 9/25
Senior Science 2/13
Studies of Religion 2/36

Just did my physics half yearly exam
think i got 40%. wasn't concentrating
the rest of the exams were good (3u is left)


how much will this physics exam (20%) effect my ATAR?

It most surely is possible.

8-9 spots is not very much to catch up with if you're willing to put in the effort.
