Hello everyone. I'm having difficulty in selection my subjects for Year 11, 2012 (if we survive)

My main problems is that I cannot find another subject to fill my extra unit and struggling to determine which subjects to keep and which to leave behind.

I am doing maths accelerated currently. that means our top maths class in particular are finishing off Year 11 two unit this term. My outcome is to complete the accelerated extension 1 course prelim. So I have 3 units for maths already

I want to do extension english, but I believe I won't perform at all in the class compared to the other students. I am ranked in the 15th - 20th of my grade and will probably perform in advanced english. People have tried to scare me about the dangers of managing two extension subjects.

I want to do physics. Ever since year 7, physics has interested me. I am in the range of marks to get into that course. Also, I am unsure whether or not I should do chemistry! The high scaling of chem is one positive, which can be backfired on to me. I believe chem is too difficult and if I get a low mark, the scaling would not help me at all.

Economics I am certain to take.

Studies of religion 1 is compulsory in our school, but I'm willing to take it anyway.

So currently I have Maths (3 unit), English (Unsure advanced or extension), physics (2 unit), chemistry???, economics (2 unit) and Studies of Religion (1 unit)

Should I go for extension english or stick with advanced? Should I take chemistry or leave it to physics? If I don't take chem, which science should i take instead?

If you enjoy English & are willing to do extra work for it then you should take up extension English. You should try it as year 10 English is a lot different to year 11 English & you may be a lot better than you think you are. You can always drop down to advanced English if you dislike it but you should try it as you've got nothing to lose. You can't pick up a subject, you can only drop in year 11. In year 12 you can pick up extension 2 maths, extension 2 English or extension History. Languages too I think.

Don't choose a subject based on scaling. Pick a subject by how much it interests you because you will have more motivation to work on the subject. If you don't do chem do physics instead as you have some interest in it. Doing chem opens up more pathways for you.

From what you've told us, I would recommend for you to take physics as you have an interest in it but don't base your decision based on what anyone says. It is your decision in the end & we are just stating our opinions.

What do you want to study after high school?

Passion > perceived pressure of not doing well. If you have a passion, if you have commitment, if you study right, you will be a champion. Everyone thought I was going to fail my mathematics examinations, I have proved them wrong with the things I have listed. I took it to the next level with the rest of my subjects.

Okay look, I do both extensions. I also do all science. You hear people say that it's just too hard or too much or whatever. It's not true. Stop listening to what everyone else says. Don't NOT pick up a subject just because someone does not believe in your abilities. There is no such thing as a 'hard' subject. If you are willing to put in the effort, everything should come in together smoothly. Do whatever makes you happy, seriously. You're going to crash and burn in the two coming years if you're doing something that you hate. Keep in mind though that if you do find that a certain course does not suit you, you can still change through the terms (it's preferable that you recognise with that earlier on so you don't have to experience the pain of catching up X amount of work).

Only do the subjects that you like and are good at.

Don't worry, year 11 isn't that frantic.
