Subject selections are coming up pretty quickly ! Matter of fact... IT'S ALREADY JUNE :( ! Term 3 is subject selection for year 10s in my school and to be honest... i don't know what to pick... i know some people say "pick what you are best at" but i have no idea what i'm good at. I'm interested in medical but business i hear opens up a bit more opportunities, and tbh... the child in me always wanted to wear a suit every day, walk around with a suitcase in my hand and a starbucks in another :haha: ! My plans are either business or something medical or science related which led me to the final two:

- Ext 1 Maths (3u)
- Adv English (2u)
- Biology (2u)
- Chem (2u)
- Physics (2u)
- Business (2u) or Modern/Ancient (2u)

OR
-Ext 1 Maths (3u)
-Adv English (2u)
-Business Studies (2u)
-Legal Studies (2u)
-Modern/Ancient (2u)
-Chem/Bio/Physics (2u)

Right now i'm pretty sure i can get into those courses if everything goes accordingly. I'm pretty good in those subjects even if i cram a lot  (won't happen in year 11 and 12 I PROMISE)

I'm not sure if i should try out for ext 1 english but i know for sure i want to do Ext 1 Maths (I use to do accelerated but dropped it because i wanted to spend time on my hobbies and i didn't want to have stress a year earlier.)

Famous last words (I'm such a cynic). In all seriousness though, go with the combination which you are most comfortable with I reckon.

*choose subjects which you are interested in as you are most likely to do well in them
*keep your options open-bit of science and bit of commerce

This.

But seeing as you're unsure, I'm going to assume you will perform equally well in each of the subjects listed above. If that's the case...

- Mathematics Extension 1 (3U)
- Advanced English (2U)
- Physics (2U)
- Chemistry (2U)
- Business (2U)

I think the first one subject choice looks well rounded, if your not quite sure which field to go into yet

I think you should do two science (for med I suggest do phys/chem as my teacher mentioned that biology is mainly rote and uni biology isn't much different to hsc biology, he also mentioned how chem would be more useful in uni) and two humanity subjects (in your case for commerce, business, eco/legal or maybe even ancient if you enjoy history) as you seem interested in them, along with advanced english and 3 unit maths.

This leaves you with 13 units, you can always drop one (11 units), or two if you decide you dislike them (there's always a possibility of picking up 4u maths) - ie 10 units.

If I choose to drop all my science related topics and decide to do business, could i pick up legal/ economics half way in year 11, so would this mean I should drop down to 2u maths or should i continue with ext 1?

What would benefit me if i were to choose to do 4 unit maths, and what would the chances of me doing it if i were to say score about 80% or higher in my preliminaries?

In my old-fashioned way of thinking - those who have the aptitude/ability should choose the foundational disciplines: apart from English, choose from Maths (>= 3U), Physics, Chemistry or Biology, and Economics. These subjects will provide you with the necessary foundation to pursue Medicine, Law, Commerce, Science, Engineering, Actuary, Optometry, Dentistry etc. You have so many options open to you. Remember, in year 10 - how can you be so sure what you really want to do at Uni? If you prefer the Humanities, then of course you'll need to replace the science units with the relevant humanities units.

I don't think Business Studies is the route to Commerce, Legal Studies to Law and Engineering Studies to Engineering.

If i were to choose a science course and not choose 4 unit maths. Would there be a good chance of having an atar of 90+ (considering that i chose all of the science related, adv english, ext 1 maths, etc)

You can get 90 with any combination of subjects, none should disadvantage you that much especially with an aim of 90.

If i were to choose business would it benefit me in any way to study 3 unit maths, seeing that atar for business studies related topics are 92+ atar. + how is the pay, what are the chances of getting a well paying job and would i get to wear a suit to work every day (sorry, i may be 15 but there's always a little kid in me who's ambitions was to wear a suit and feel like i've succeeded. Probably 4 year old me got it from a movie or a tv show, i dunno...)

That depends on many factors - it's not just "degree = job = cash = BMW in the driveway". One thing which students seem to forget is that many degrees are only a PART of gaining employment in your desired industry.

hahaha i know people say "HSC isn't the only way to a successful career" but damn don't forget it sure is the quickest and it never hurts to lose a few sleepness nights while you're still young.

You have to suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.
