Hey guys,
I'm new on this forum and I'd like some feedback on the subjects I'm currently doing as a Year 11 Preliminary Student.
All I would like is to know what is the scaling like for my subjects, and how much effort is generally required and put in for each of them.

Standard English (I've heard bad news about this one)
Mathematics
Extension 1 Mathematics
Physics
Legal Studies
Business Studies
Economics

And yes, I know my subjects are quite mathematical-based and business-based subjects, I looking for a career in those areas.

Cheers :)

Effort depends on a persons natural ability so I can really say but as for scaling wise

Great: MX1
Good: Eco Maths Physics
Okay: Business, Legal

So I have to work at getting at least a band 5 in standard.

Excellent: MX1 .
Great: Economics, Physics, standard (no this isnt a typo, standard scales extremely well it just aligns poorly, which makes it extremely difficult to get a band 6 - less than 5% of people get over a band 5 in the subject for that matter)
Very Good: Maths
Good: business, legal

When you say it aligns poorly, what do you mean by that?

When you do the exam, your final exam mark is aligned from your raw mark (for example, in modern a mark of 84/100 on the final exam becomes a final exam mark of around 90/100). This is where standard performs poorly.

So, hypothetically, if all my marks were 90 and standard was say, 80... My ATAR would be quite a bit lower than what I expected..

The aligning of Standard is horrible. So much that any scaling is quite negated. (On paper, it scales like Adv Eng, but the aligning is shot)
Your best scaler is MX1
Then Eco, Maths, Physics are similiarish scaling
Then legal, business (though apparently business aligns well?)
....
Standard

Oh and ^ with 90 for all your subs bar standard, you'd still get 94.25 ish according to ATAR calc. Because Maths, Eco and Phys scale well.

Well, your raw internal marks (i.e. your percentage from school assessments) arent that important - its your ranks which count. The aliging of standard prevents people from getting high final marks - iirc in 2010 only 64/32,000 standard students got over 90. For more on aligning go here http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc-results/moderation.html

Jesus...
Standard can ruin your other marks.
That's ridiculous, why not just have it like most other subjects where 5% to 10%, or whatever, get the band 6's.
Under 100 people in the state each year getting a band 6 in standard. Stupid.

If you put in any effort at all you've already beaten 95% of the cohort.

Aligning refers to the 'altering' of marks so that so many people achieve a certain mark.

For example (exaggerated), 99% of biology students in the HSC get under 40%. Aligning is where they take this 40% and stretch it so that it becomes to top mark of 100, thus not everyone fails and so many people achieve a band 6,5,4 etc. It was clearly a ridciously hard exam.

Scaling, however, is done by UAC after all your marks and aligning have been done.

For example, the marks of two subjects are sent to them. They see one student got 80% in Extn Maths and another got 95% in Industrial Technology. They realise that it is a lot harder to get that 80% in maths then industry. Consequently, when they convert these marks into your ATAR equivalents, the marks change to reflect this difficultly. Therefore, 80% in maths is 'scaled' up to an ATAR mark of 95(ish) and a 95% is 'scaled' down to 90(ish).

This is as simple as i can put the difference between aligning and scaling :)

Please let me know if I have made any mistakes.

Apparently Business Studies scaled better than SDD so yeah? Unless the aligning is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT :/
