Not going on the NZ trip....
Too expensive, I still owe way too much money from my Colorado season (especially since I can sleep on friends floors in NZ and get comp tickets) and I'm instructing over the break anyway.

But I think I'll be going to the AUC's. I'm going to be at Buller instructing the week before that, so I may as well stay for AUC's. I will just be in pipe (i think).

unsw ski club has a trip this winter with alcohol included for approximately half the price, with accomodation on the slopes

it's at thredbo so the snow might be slightly worse, and it's two days shorter, but subski isn't really getting the best deal for you guys

Thredbo is sh!t . Especially in July when the chances of snow to 1300 metres (ie. the village) aren't very high, and the resort is split in two (ie Kosiosko Express area and Merrits area).

I don't think you can compare the NZ to Thredbo, especially in July (NZ usually gets better early season falls). I'd rather go to NZ anyday. Unfortunantly, I can't work in NZ this season.

Be happy you don't go to Perisher or ... Ugh ... Victorian resorts.

Perisher is a lot lot better than Thredbo and more importantly, Perisher can build a pipe.
I'd be happy to work at Perisher, but no way would I work at Thredbo.

perisher is fine for beginner/intermediate skiers, you just have thousands of people skiing up and down the piste/marked trails,

I am not saying thredbo is an advanced skiing resort by global standards, but by australian it certainly is. Thredbo is higher than perisher and has more challenging terrain in the back bowls/off piste and down the funnelweb/cannonball side of things.

That said, I booked in from the 16-22 july for these holidays for my 12th consecutive year there :) (hence my reason for a totally objective post :))

let me know if any of u will be there at that time, there is already about 30 of my friends going, its going to be wicked

hahaha i knew my post would get a stupid reaction from someone

congratulations, you took the bait

the question remains, where is the rest of the money going from this trip? they must be financing their sydney social events with it or something like that

Thredbo is a couple of metres higher. Hardly anything significant. Thredbo's one advantage is the length of the runs. But it never has snow down to 1300 (that is why every other resort doesn't go that low). Maybe, it might be a little more steep than Perisher. But its not significant. Hotham and Buller are significantly more steep than Thredbo

Back bowls/off piste haha. Thredbo is built on one face of the range it doesn't have back bowls. It does have out-of bounds (including Golf Course, which I think you were probably referring to). However, the Golf Course doesn't have very good cover in July.

The only thing that Thredbo has going for it is the Village. But then it has too many steps :p

It sounds like we have a bunch of gapers posting in this thread.

I argue that Perisher is generally too flat for any significant fun on the mountain. As for victorian mountains, having only been to Mt. Buller during 2000 [fantastic season, unfortunately] I would say it was better than Thredbo [barring last years season]. However, it's still much too short for my liking.

It all depends what you're after in a mountain. I want long runs, more fun for racing. Crackenback is great for variety [moguls down cannonball and the bluff, steep terrain on little beauty, and easy speed on the supertrail] in any case. I find that the runs end too quickly anywhere else.

And if perisher gets points for having a better pipe, then you don't go skiing for the same reasons I do.

Aside: Maybe perisher scores points during July, but if you're skiing on weekends in mid-August, I'd reccomend Thredbo any day.

by higher I meant compared to its base, Thredbo's drop is from 2050m to 1350m whereas Perishers is aboout 2050 to 1750, thats an extra 400m vertical drop at thredbo which transforms into longer runs, like keypad said, the supertrail is awesome when racing with friends. Plus, in the 12 consecutive years i've been at thredbo, there was only 1 year when you couldn;t ski top to bottom.

Do you know what off piste is? Its trails that arn't marked/pounded by groomers, of course there is a fair amount of it at thredbo. the golf course, which isn't out of bounds and is covered every year. You can also go out of bounds from the top of karrels and swing around back onto the golf course and if you go off the side of meritts down off boundary rider you get some great off piste snow except you gotta walk back up to the cruise for about 15 mins wen u get to the bottom. Follow the snowgums chair down for some great skiing every year too. You have everyone skiing down the supertrail and all u gotta do is head off to the left and ski the top half under the snow gums chair through the trees. Follow cannonball down and keep going straight towards the old tower 10 ramshead station for some good skiing too. It can take a good hour to get from the top of karrels to the base of the supertrail if you go out for some backbowls/tree bashing and for me thats what skiing is about, i find crusing up and down marked runs relaxing and or fun racing with friends but the real essence of skiing for me is being out with your jacket off, sweaty, finding little deep niche snow rifts and yoddling when u find em :)

Long runs? Australia? Haha.
Thredbo does have longer runs. But if it isn't covered or its crappy man made shit down the bottom, who cares. I'd rather get the lift up quickly and go again, than ride crap.

Do you know what off piste is?
I gave a critisim of your use of back bowls. Thredbo doesn't have back bowls.
As for a defintion of off piste. I am criticising you for your loose defnition. Yes it means non-packed out snow where there are not marked runs. But if you were overseas and called hoping in the trees, ducking the ropes and popping back in etc. off piste, you would be laughed at. I guess at least you are not using the word backcountry or I would really laugh. While your use is technically correct, you have to be a w@nker to say, I'm going 'off-piste', rather than 'i'm going in the trees or ducking this rope'.

It may get covered every year, but for how much of the season.

Certainly Australia and Thredbo can have its days. But in general, when conditions are crappy (which is very very often), Thredbo is crap.

I agree that trees and pow are the most fun thing to do. However, in Australia its not. We don't get light snow (low altitude, low air pressure, low temps) and I don't think riding glue in the rain is fun. Also, we dont exactly have tree skiing (well its very very limited). Snow gums, with their low lying branches and very small distances between them, just aren't as good as pines/aspens/cherry blossoms for tree skiing/riding. I really think you should hit up Colorado/Utah/Wyoming/Japan, and you may understand the difference.

Are you sure you want to get rolled? Or do you want to stop now?

Buller has to close of the best terrain I've ridden, in the 20+ resorts I've been to (ie. the Chutes, Bloddy Hell, Fed, Fannys, McLaughlins). I've had some amazing days at Buller. I can't think of any stand out day I've had at Thredbo.

Racing down groomers? Down the supertrail? If I saw you racing down a run like that, and I was teaching, I'd be very tempted to clip your pass.

I enjoy all aspects of my riding. Powder is the most fun of anything (had some amazing days this past North American season, with two days having chest deep pow, the lightest I've ever ridden). But because of the all round technical skill that is required for trees, bumps (yes a rider who loves bumps) and pipe, I tend to enjoy them. I do have fun on groomers, if I'm working on things and I do like the park (although I need to get some more balls in the park). The pipe and park should definantly be something that should be factored in, and it is a criticism I throw at Buller all the time. Riding/skiing should be about diversity.

But I still think you are both a bunch of gapers.
