I am looking at trading my VY for something a little less petrol guzzling, a bit smaller but still powerful! I should get about 16 for the VY and can put in up to make it to about 20 or so, what should I look at? I want a medium sedan or small four wheel drive (CRV or like) and also late models! All suggestions appreciated!

don't get a soft roader ( aka baby SUV eg. RAV4, CRV ). get a V6 Camry

well the Camry i'm driving is last gen so it ain't a roomy as current gen. you can't get many kits for it unless you import from the States. my policy is that if it looks good and goes great you shouldn't be worrying about other stuff. the car's reliable, handles good but i don't know about economy. i drive heaps so it could use $50 of petrol on a busy week, $30 on a lower moderate week. overtaking is a breeze and brakes are excellent. fit some good tyres and it feels beautiful to drive. however i've only ever driven my Camry and my cousins Jazz very rarely. you need opinions from those with more variety of car experience.

The statistics that 7th sign quoted sound right, but only for the smallest 1.6L Bimmer. With a 56L fuel tank, that stat is suggesting 7L/100 km, which I am willing to bet none of the other (BMWs) are able to achieve on city cycles.
Consider an LPG conversion as an option. You can often net yourself a guzzling 6 or 8 cylinder, and cut fuel costs to equate a car with half its size. For around $2k, you will recouop the price of the LPG installation in fuel savings after a year or so.

Ive got an old Camry (1993) but in general they are meant to be very reliable, not to heavy on fuel for their power, prity roomy inside for their size, retain their value reasonably well, and I dont know about newer models but I read a review on mine from the NRMA website that supposedly they have enough power to beat a Holden or Ford off the line so they are certainly no slouch in that regard which is perfect for those situations where you need alittle more power!

How would a 2000/01 Falcon go on fuel? I need a decent car that's somewhat good on fuel, but mainly somethin I can drive outta Sydney across NSW and into QLD without breaking down in the middle of the highway.

Although I have to admit I did travel extensively back then, I think we had to refuel the whole tank by the 3rd or 4th day after rental (they gave it to us with a full tank)..
I dont know if it was tweaked or something.. but srsly.. that car drank fuel down twice as fast as my euro..
If i were you, i'd be more scared of running out of fuel in the middle of the highway
