hey there,

well as the title suggests, i am going over to the states next June to work at summer camps but i am not really sure as to where i should go....so i was wondering if any one had any suggestions because i am stuck...

there are way too many states over there to choose from though a few of my friends have already told me not to go to some states but i guess i am looking for people who have been over there to give me their thoughts if you were to be so kind....

thanks guys...

if you can give a better idea of what sort of things interest you or don't interest you, and what states you're leaning towards thus far, that'd help

i thought you know with australia, some areas are more friendly and welcoming than others, i thought that over in the states it would be similar...i definately know that i want to go to New York, not only the city but state and i have to go to Ohio (family frinds) and i think Nebraska(sp?) other than that i have no idea....i am also interested in looking into stuff about Native Americans and history stuff i guess...

Just quietly I would recommend you steer clear of the Southern States.

if you've an interest with native americans, the southwest is prob best for that since thats where they all got relocated (arizona, new mexico, etc) or the middle northern part of the country (north and south dakota)
if its more u.s. history..... you'd need to stay to the east coast esp between roughly virginia and new york.

generally, the midwest is prob the friendlier areas..... but i'd reckon, so long as you avoid particularly rural areas in the south and some of the very urban areas in the major cities, you'll not face much trouble.

part of it is that i think its somewhat impossible for americans to have an issue with australians. australia has a very specific profile for americans. if you've seen the simpsons episode, just realise that that is one of the main sources of how any americans know about australia.

unfortunitly i don't have much of the location-specific travel experience, but history and such works far better

and feel free to add additional stuff as far as what you'd want the location to include or not include (climate as well, though thats easier to guess at) or state-specific questions... can answer what i can on that

There a place called "French Woods". it's about 2 and a half hours from New York. it's a (and i quote) Festival of the Performing Arts and includes theatre, circus, sports, horseback riding, dance, watersports, music, adventure, magic, art and computers & technology. here's their website: http://www.frenchwoods.com/

hey
yeah, i'm planning on doing the Summer Camp thing next year.
early applications have opened with CCUSA, i want to go with them, i reckon their deals with STA travel and stuff are the best.
well check them out, see if you want to go with them... http://www.ccusa.com/country.aspx?countrycode=AS

im really interested in doing this too.

my boyfriends best friend did it and had an absolute blast.

another family friend said he had the time of his life.

you dont earn very much, but its more about the experience. ive looked into several companies already that organise them and similar things and am thinking really strongly about it. i have heaps of brouchures and stuff ive been reading, looks like fun.

I don't know what you peolpe are talking about avoiding the south and the rural south??? The south is renowned for it's "Southern Hospitality" especially in states like Georgia, Tennessee etc. Texas might be a little more cruder and full on but they're by no means unaccepting.

Although all of the above information refers to if your skin color is white.
also southern people tend to be extremely religious and so on, i am certainly not against that but they do go a bit far with the whole banning of teaching science in schools because it contridicts what is taught in the bible...i am not trying to be rude here, so dont get offended please...

Two of my nieces have worked in summer camp in the US. It's not bad. there are always counselors from the US as well as other countries. The downside may be the pay--I don't know--but a lot of them do it year after year, so it can't be that bad. Most camps are in beautiful areas, so if you're into the outdoors, it's great.

The camping experience will tell you summer camp isn't only about recreation. More than anything, camp teaches individuals about life and how to live it well. It's a unique place to learn.
