Ok, i really nmeed to expand my wardrobe, and was considerding buying a dress, one suitable for Xmas lunch and other "holiday" activities where miniskirts & jeans arent really appropriate

What do you suggest? And, low prices (cheap = good! :))

Oh me too. I don't own a dress but I really should. I'm not sure where a good place to look is, keeping in mind I'll need something slightly more substantial than a size 6

i think flowy skirts, whilst cool at the moment arent going to last for much longer ...there are soooooooo many hot dresses out at the moment to suit all budgets.. most from chain stores like portmans sportsgirl etc are between $100 and $200..and dont forget new years and maybe a day at the races?

and lundy...im a 14 or 16 and i suggest a plain block colour dress (try jacqui e, portmans, country road and myer- even the old women section) and dressing it up with cool accessories and shoes. that way you can draw the eye to parts of your body that you like.. eg I like my decollatage and cleavage so i always wear a cool necklace and make that the focus.

with so many different fashions out at the moment you could wear boho chunky beads or whatever one day and be polished in pearls the next.. diva and equip have really cool stuff out at the moment that are cheap so you can afford to buy lots of different styles..it also means you get lots of wear out of your dress

Ah thanks. I'm a 14/16 too so it's always difficult finding something nice and flattering in my size.

yeah tree of life is good
the other day i found gorgeous ones in witchery and jag, very flattering (lundy, esp if you have a substantial bosom, i find most dresses make it look sooo huge)
they were both $170 though
so if you're not willing to spend that much, i went to glebe markets on saturday and got this beautiful silk dress for $79. i may even become my formal dress...
oh i love dresses how they fit so well and ahhhhhhhhhh

ok, there is tree of life...
but there is also supre. tacky, cheap but they have a very cute dress that comes to your calf and is available in white, black, brown and olive.
but i always pay the bit extra and buy something from sass and bide. they had some cute dresses for about 160!

I'm not a huge fan of supre...

But for cheapish but still nice, I like Tempt? Temt? and places like SES and a bunch of the other asian-run stores. You can get a lot of good dresses there - nothing over-the-top, and mostly classic shapes that flatter everyone. you're looking at $20-$50, which isn't bad, and the materials/cut will be better than that of Supre.

I love tree of life's clothes but they only ever seem to make tiny sizes.

Same with supre, SES and all those asiany stores. GAH. shopping's a bitch.

I won't eat for a month. Then I'll buy a dress.

Portman's?

There's an outlet store in the city my friend took me to, and they are absolutely overflowing with the curvy sizes (dresses, tops, whatever)- they look great! (I distinctly remember standing in front of a skirt and saying "damn, I wish I was a size 14, I love this skirt so much!!!). Not only that, but they're CHEAP!!!! AND SO NICE!!! (I ended up buying a silk top... for $5! Portmans! Five bucks!)

Kate Hurst have some lovely dresses out this season. I have these dresses:-

http://www.katehurst.com/images/collections/sweet-wonder/05-bustier-dress-floral.jpg (but in black and white polkadots)

Alice McCall, Bettina Liano, Lisa Ho, etc all have nice summery dresses out at the moment. Chainstore-wise Witchery, Sheike, Sportsgirl all have nice, reasonably affordable dresses in store. Can't think of anymore.

Loving all the dresses this season!!
