I just got accepted into a B Commerce (Marketing) / B Laws and everyone I've talked to have said that by the end of third year I should have finished my Commerce degree and then 4th and 5th are meant to be solid law units... I like the sound of this as it means that I can apparently graduate from my commerce degree and use it to get a better job on the side.

My problem is I've gone backwards through my commerce degree and worked out all the units I have to do for it (was necessary given the coherent study plan) and there's no way i can fit it all along with the specified 200 and 300 level law subjects by that time, even if I do pretty much all 14 unit semesters (which is looking more and more likely). I was wondering how other students do it? Do they leave some of the specified law units until 4th and 5th year? Or do they, as I'm now thinking will be necessary, enrol in summer school in order to complete the few subjects that won't fit?

I know I won't have to worry about this for a while... it's just doing my head in how on earth it's all meant to work, and whether I should be trying to cram more into this year... which isn't really an option for me cos I've tried an overly heavy workload in the past and it creates mediocre results.

Anyways! sorry for such a long post... any help on this topic by the oh so knowledgable mac students would be greatly appreciated

I am probably not the best person because I transferred so my program is a little out of order.

Effectively, from what I worked out, is that whilst many people desire to have their first degree completed by the end of Year 3, for many it simply cant happen. That is partially due to the requirements of the degrees.

Put simply, if you intend to take LAW I cant see you taking on a full time job for the 4th and 5th year. That is not to say you cant use the Commerce skills and gain a part time job/cadetship etc. People have gotten work with Deloitte without fully completing their Accounting/BBA degree and I know becauses thats one of my better mates.

So in short, I advise you to try and complete everything in order of levels ie 100 levels, 200 levels and so on. It is best to keep your degrees in the order that they are given rather than mixing and matching.

In relation to Summer School, that is one option and it can appeal. However, I would just think of it like this. My BCom/LLB needs 5 years to finish.... even if my Commerce units go into the 4th or 5th year it is no loss because I will still be at uni for LAW.

My BBA/LLB degree is a bit out of order too, so I will do BBA in 4th or 5th year and really it doesnt bother me at all.

yeah, i wasn't even considering a full time job in 4th or 5th year... I just figured I could be behind a desk somewhere instead of behind a cash register somewhere for the 2 days that I work now... haha.

Thanks for your advice! It's good to know that it's not completely out of the ordinary to still be doing my commerce units when it comes to fourth year. There's just no way I'll be able to fit it unless I take on crazy schedules.

Anyways, thanks again!

I am certain that you could find a desk job somewhere after Year 3 even if you havent completed your BCom.

Essentially, the businesses will understand the reasons behind you not completing it in 3 years (ie transfer and law components).

From working out my schedule, I would finish uni when I have done 5.5 or 6 years at uni.
