ok, I spent about 4 hours (there were 3000 bags to get through and only about 25 of us) packing the "free stuff" into the showbags that you get in the tours, and let me just say it's better than what I got when I was at O-Week last year.

The only things you don't get from last year is that there's no drink bottle and, well, how shall I put it... a life time supply of condoms for all you Catholics. Though you get a free tampon! :D

Doesn't really mean anything, this board's members aren't proprtionate of which uni everyone in the state is going to.

I don't want to dwell much into the UNSW vs USyd debate only to say that if you're happy with your course that is all that matters (and the environment too).

if that method was true, latin would be the most popular non-english subject... but then again ... :p

That's because it has the greatest mod to student ratio :p

I'm still in yr 12 but i've been to all the uni open days last year.

What uni would be the best if i want to do commerce/law. Focusing more on the commerce.
I'm also a film nut and my dream is to become a film director so what uni can offer me electives or extracurricular stuff to do with film?

Just to weigh in on the buildings debate on usyd. The gothic buildings are only good if you're doing arts or humanities related, otherwise fuggettaboutit. The eco/comm building is ugly and all the engineering ones are fugly and law is like totally off main-campus for most of the degree.

My first impression was that unsw was more cohesive geographically. But i'd like to here more opnions from you guys who are actually there.

UNSW has NIDA, and the cutoff for Commerce is higher than the one at USyd. Granted I go to UNSW, so I'm kinda biased, so it would be good to have a USyd person give some reasons in favour of USyd, because I don't know a whole lot about it.

I couldn't care less about the 'gothic' feel of Sydney... I prefer Carslaw/Eastern Avenue to the Main Quad.

this is a little off topic, but what gpa do you have to get to transfer to usyd or unsw at the end of the year for law?

lol, there's mercury as current student in the Jap forum, and me.
1:1

Can't tell about the comm/law coz I don' do either, but my friend chose usyd and she's doing comm/law.

Yeah, forget the gothic buildings because first year law is on the other end mostly.

Anyway, Syd starts week after next, so you won't get comprehensive lecture details from us for a while.

Yo MuldersGun,

* Sorry guys! this is a bit off topic

I am doing Com/Law at UNSW and it seems we have something in common in terms of film career ambitions...

however, it is probably better to do art/law if you want to do film stuff at uni... there is not much choice for film electives within commerce (i think)

I on the other hand will do my film stuff as co-curricular activities, there are plenty of clubs - and if i am still keen on it when i finish my degree - pursue it as a postgrad or even better do it overseas at UCLA film school if not AFTRS

so, u need to ask urself, u want to do film stuff at uni? get right into it? or do comm/law and thus give urself an excellent set of skills to fall back on (being a successful film director is hard! though fun!) and pursue it as a hobby...

I don't know about the law at Sydney, but commerce is really flexible because you don't have to specialise in first year. They set you these core subjects (macroeconomics, microeconomics, accounting, business information systems, statistics) which will probably take up about a year and a half to do if you're doing a combined degree. After you do the core bits (and have a feel for how the system works, get a better idea of what you might want to do) you choose your options majors etc.

IMHO, UNSW is hard to get to. It's not really near any train stations so you have to catch a bus there. To catch the bus, you might also have to catch a train, and depending on where you live, you might have to catch another bus to the train station. A b*tch. Wheras Sydney, you can walk to the campus (admittedly from Redfern)

Higher cutoffs don't mean anything. The cutoff for Com/Law at Sydney is higher than NSW.

NSW is full of asians.

I will reserve my judgement on the eco/bus buildings at sydney until i get there.
