Ummm... yeah, what can you say other than "quotation" when you're quoting something in some formal essay.... :)

You can quote someone, but you can also post a quote from someone's speech. Words can be nouns and verbs at the same time.

oh okies cool... i was thinking of using that, but wasn't sure if it was appropriate within that particular context.... (novel, not pr0n :D)

can't you just write (author's name here) states, "(quote here)." ?

I like this one best. So do teachers. Less wordy. Easier to read, easier to write. It also has a much better tone (however this is often dependent on what you're writing - essay, speech, article, etc.)

Mr Wang's novel '29 Positions and their Individual Effectiveness' states that "while one's sexuality should be explored, we should remember never to go too far, in case of sticky accident or tangled bodies."

The following is a quotation from the novel '29 Positions and their Individual Effectiveness': "while one's sexuality should be explored, we should remember never to go too far, in case of sticky accident or tangled bodies."

The top one is much better.
