I am having a problem with all the system programs such as windows task manager, msconfig, regedit. For example when i press alt + ctrl + del, the task manager appears then after half a second it disappears and appars in the the bottom hand taskbar. When I move my mouse over it, the icon disappears. The other system programs also disappear completely soon after I run them but do not minimise like the task manager does. Anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it up? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Maybe there's a specific thing but I say you just have some crappy adware or spyware running which is trying to prevent you from using Taskman to kill it?... Try running adaware or spybot? Sorry I can't be more specific, but to me whenever that happens with programs it's 'coz there's crap on my PC. I don't think your Windows needs repairing.

... unless you are running some kind of utility software which replaces those tools? I'm not quite sure what software would restrict access, but I'd imagine in some networks it'd be a security program which would automatically kill anything which had the power to alter the system?

It sounds as though you have had a particularly malicious virus attack my friend, so this is the tack I'll take. Regedit, the Task Manager, and Msconfig are all important system-cleansing utilities that are commonly targeted by viruses (they either terminate the programs when they start up, like what you've got, or they delete them outright, which is very, very annoying). For the time being, head to here to download a free utility that will create temporary copies of the three programs which you can then use (when you use the utility, it's normal to get a warning from competent virus scanner - hit OK, the program is clean).

We then move to the step of cleaning your computer. I assume that your virus scanner hasn't been able to clear out the little nasty/, so you'll need a new/better one. Head to http://free.grisoft.com/ to download AVG Free, an excellent, full featured virus scanner that I fully recommend - constant updates, lean on system resources, and free to boot. Install it, update it, then scan your whole hard drive and delete whatever it picks up. With any luck, that will fix your problem.

A spyware check wouldn't go astray either. Check out the IT Stuff FAQ for a guide on how to do that. :)

Thanks for your help guys, especially to you insert-username. I'll see if AVG can fix things up, hopefully it does. *crosses fingers*

Dennis, I couldn't get rid of that block checker because I need to use regedit to remove it and I can't do that yet with the current problem I have. But that's the least of my worries for now.
