take ACTL1001 if im not too keen on actuarial? (1 Viewer)

im not too keen on majoring in actuarial but i want to try and see what's all the fuzz about. nevertheless, i dont see myself majoring in actuarial and i heard ACTL1001 is a WAM killer. so should i take ACTL1001 for my flexible core? if not, what should i replace it with (INFS1602, LEGT1710, MARK1012)?

I don't think you should take ACTL1001 unless you really like actuarial. I've had a few friends take it, and their WAMs died.

Perhaps take marketing? I have a friend taking it now - I can ask her what she feels about it.

LEGT1710 - if you want to do business law at any time (that's if you want to drop adv math and do normal maths instead, so you can take a 2nd comm major)
INFS is for information systems.

MARK1012 seems fun, may possibly take it as an elective (Y)

for commerce/arts, they still do. For Commerce/Science they do as well. I was given permission to do so by ASB. (Y)

It's just that you can't do it in a specific type of degree, i.e. comm/sci (adv maths) or comm (international), but lemme go and confirm that with the ASB.

on the given time frame or extend a year? plus maybe because originally comm/art was designed for two comm majors and two arts majors, but comm/sci was always one comm and one sci.

Mostly if you want to extend for a year.

Comm/sci can be done with 2 comm majors and 1 sci major, but you may have to overload if you want to fit it all into 4 years.

Although tbh, my suggestion is to drop adv maths if you want to do that extra commerce major.

The lecturer for ACTL1001 Brian Chu is really shit. Everyone I have talked to said INFS and LEGT are really shit.

I was also thinking of doing ACTL1001 but I'm now reconsidering it. Did I just waste 6 UOCs doing Maths1151? Or is math1151 a prerequisite in some finance major related courses?

I don't think any maths is a prerequisite for finance major related courses. But you can check on the handbook, for sure.

I don't think you should do it unless you're already really keen on becoming an actuary. You'd have to be pretty far along the spectrum to take an ACTL course and think "wow, I never realised life insurance was this interesting."
