Hi All,

UNSW Computing will be running a university level computing course online for high school students starting on October 15th. It includes lectures from famous lecturer Richard Buckland, goes for 12 weeks and will give you a taste of what it's like to be a developer / software engineer. If you're doing your HSC when it starts, you can enrol and just catch up when you're done with the HSC.

It's free and no computing experience is required but the course will move quickly and promises to be a lot of fun. You won't receive any university credit for the course, but if you do really well that probably means you should take Computing

Harvard University is running Introduction to Computer Science online.
CS50 is one of the most well known courses at Harvard, with a vibrant community and led by the excellent lecturer David Malan.

It is a very fun course for anyone who wants to learn a bit about computing.
No experience required, but you sure will get a lot out of it! In fact most of the students have very little to no programming experience at all.
What is great about this course is that it introduces you to both computer and web programming.
Additionally throughout CS50 you will learn how to create tools that are applicable in life, such as a password encrypter/decrypter, data recovery from a formatted drive, spellcheckers and much more. And from there apply the same set of ideas to build your own projects.

If you are more of a casual computer user interested in learning some useful computing skills then I would recommend taking this course.
If you are more advanced and are sure computing is for you, then comp1917 is for you. Alternatively you may choose to tackle CS50 by doing the harder problem sets each week (hacker edition).

Personally I went through both CS50 and Comp1917 from iTunes U, and found CS50 more engaging and interesting AND SIMPLY SO MUCH MORE FUN!. You learn a wider range of skills and languages, rather than just C which is what Comp1917 tends to focus on. Nevertheless Richard is an awesome lecturer!
CS50 is taught quite casually with a steady but achievable learning curve towards the "Harvard" level you would come to expect.
