Newer than 2003 and under $12k don't really go together.. unless you're getting something that's in the 1.3-1.5L range.. so there's not many options unless you dont mind just a car that gets you from A to B without anything fancy..

However, one that suits all your criteria is the 2003 323, which is sorta ugly... but think about it, you can't even get an 03 corolla ascent for $12k [more like $14k] unless you haggle, or have a mate that's selling it..

Another one is the 03 Pulsar.. Haven't driven it, but someone in this forum owns a pulsar..

Or a mitsu lancer/mirage...

Another option is the 03 peugeot 206.... [1.6L] But I can't say anything because I've never driven one, and I dont know how they go nor do I know about their quality build..

Eh.. *cbf'd to think*.. but I wont recommend a Daewoo, Kia, some suzukis, and any other korean BS.. they break about 7 times in 2yrs..

First thing that popped into my head was Lancer. But I'd love to get a Corolla.

I have an option of buying a cheapish 03 lancer from someone I know, but it's only 1.5L and tew slow!
Well not really, but I'm being boyish and want something that goes faster!

Plus the insurance is a fucking joke.
03 Lancer 4cyl 1.5 2-Door Coupe insured for 10000 is about $2000pa
06 Mazda2 4cyl 1.5 4-Door insured for it's ncv of 15000 is the same.
The lancer is a "sports coupe" Fuck insurance companies.

lengy, agreed on the 'rolla

edit: my friend has a 323. She wouldn't recommend it.

If you go up to a V6 insurance can get cheaper if thats an issue, or check out a camry for a 4 cylinder, as it has the "family car" image, as do commodores, you could get a VY (maybe) for that money.

If you go for a getz or anything go four door if possible as anything (even old excels) that are two door are clasified as sports coupes and your insurance goes through the roof.

For my VY insurance is only about 600 a year comprehensive, thats for a 02 VY Acclaim :)

See for a first car the Commodores and Camrys are decent, I'm used to a Camry V6, love the power and the fact that people love me giving them a lift in it but I still prefer a smaller car.

yeah, i'd love a big car, but fuck paying on-road costs compared to a small car.
I already drive my mum's V6 camry at the moment.

Yep Camry V6s are decent.... as for a car, Id say a Corolla is the way to go... but dont expect power, realisitically if your looking at 4cylinders there is no point even talking about power, just look at what is the most reliable, cheap on fuel, cheap to maintain etc

deffiantly dont get a peugeot 206,

get a nice honda...

seriously with 12k you cant get much but look at maby a 2001 integra? if your veyr luck you might pick up a bargin one for 12000 but I dont think so.

Why does it have to be 2003 + just make it 2000 + at least.

The reason I left out the honda option was because with $12k, it isnt possible to buy one that's 03+.. you can't even get a 03 jazz ffs, let alone a 01 integra.. hondas keep their value too well.. any honda after 03 you'll be looking at least $15k+
