For any Telstra or Optus Cable (not ADSL) users:
What kind of download speeds do you get? A friend of mine gets around 100KB/s as far as I know on Telstra. Some other guys get 500KB-1MB/s downloads (huge difference) I live in a busy area on the north shore, so what kind of speeds should I expect? How do Telstra speeds compare with Optus speeds in busy metro areas?

From what i have been hearing from actual telstra users and the general opinion on whirlpool is that telstra cable is quite slow, and keeps disconnecting etc.

I have optus cable (just got it) and get speeds around the 500kb (average). Sometimes i get 900kb, sometimes i get 100kb. Depends what site im downloading off. I also live on the north shore.

if you are talking about brute speed when there are very little traffic, telstra is ultimately faster than optus

but if you take into consideration of traffic loads, optus would be faster because it is less crowded

15K??
That's barely above 56k speeds...I never download from Aussie sites so I probably can't expect those 500K+ speeds that everyone's raving about.

I'm more of a Kazaa-downloader than anything + a bit of browsing for school etc.

Did you have cable or ADSL from another ISP prior to moving to Optus.

Maybe I'm better off getting TPG's 1.5MB ADSL plan - probably more consistent speeds.
BTW. That average of 500KB/s - is that from US sites??

Haha, bit of a generalisation :p

From MS, Apple, Bigpond itself, get like 700-800kb/s, from Aussie sites/large US sites, a few hundred kb/s, but if you're getting something off a remote server somewhere, might be like 15-20kb/s.

Really depends where you're getting it from. A lot of cable providers are all going to have the same trouble getting a good speed if the server is in a far away location with a bad upstream.

if you get that adsl 1.5mbit plan the max you will ever see is 187KB/s

go on ADSL, way better than cable these days.

or better go unwired, or use iburst (relatively new)

I recommend TPG ADSL unlimited cuz u get 1500/256 for only 50 bux! (i dont have TPG, but Ozemail DSL)

My 2 cents.

im on telstra and i usually get max 700kb/s, but on p2p i can only manage about 250kb/s max

yeah uploads are capped at 128kbs so thats about 12.8kb/s

cos im only on a 1gb plan, and ive gone through 800mb in like 6 days, mostly browsing
Heh, I used to be on the 1gb plan with Bigpond before I changed to Unlimited. Could only do about 30mb per day without going over my limit. Suffice to say I always went over my limit, haha.

I guess so.
But I never go on Aussie sites (hardly ever anyway), so it's unlikely that I'll see speeds of 500KB/s or more on P2P or US sites. From what I can gather, I can probably expect speeds around those of BreaKing's (35-75KB/s), in which case I'm probably better off going with a good, consistent 150KB+/s connection.

Are you located in a metro/busy area, or a quieter area?
Is that 700KB/s downloading from US sites??
