I guess so.
But I never go on Aussie sites (hardly ever anyway), so it's unlikely that I'll see speeds of 500KB/s or more on P2P or US sites. From what I can gather, I can probably expect speeds around those of BreaKing's (35-75KB/s), in which case I'm probably better off going with a good, consistent 150KB+/s connection.
adsl will be the same, its obvious, if you are downloading from an international site, itll be slower. Cable is faster in every respect

go on ADSL, way better than cable these days.

or better go unwired, or use iburst (relatively new)

I recommend TPG ADSL unlimited cuz u get 1500/256 for only 50 bux! (i dont have TPG, but Ozemail DSL)

My 2 cents.
how is adsl way better than cable these days? Apart from double the upload speed, adsl is pretty slow...

Are you located in a metro/busy area, or a quieter area?
Is that 700KB/s downloading from US sites??
na from local sites. but overseas sites still turn out to be faster than adsl though

I guess ADSL 2 and ADSL 2+ will provide greater speeds, probably exceeding cable speeds eventually. I just think that ADSL has more "room to grow", but on the other hand ADSL 2/2+ will probably be expensive for the first few years.

Looking at cable, the real question is: Telstra or Optus?
I'm on Telstra for the phone, so I'd be eligible for "Rewards", but Optus is generally more reliable/faster right?

Yeah.. that's what the majority would say. It's kind of hard to say because 99% of Bigpond customers probably don't use the net enough to complain / don't care, so it'd be impossible to get an accurate reading of which is better.

I'm fairly happy with Bigpond, I mean with what other ISP can you be told that you're offline due to a connection error, and still continue to use the net like nothing had changed, without the cable client running ?

But yeah, I'd say Optus sounds more reliable, but haven't had issues with Bigpond for ages, so no complaints here.

dream on, even with an upgrade to adsl with that ver 2 crap what ever, speeds in australia will still be slow

the question is not the technology, it is with companies limiting the technology

oputus has a hard cap
read telstras fine print. they MAY shape your connection after you go over 10gb
